Rumored Potential Role. Kristen as 'Snow White'?

Deadline.com's Mike Fleming and Nikke Finke With word circulating that Viggo Mortensen is in talks to play one of the title characters in Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal Pictures, will Twilight Saga's Kristen Stewart end up with playing Snow White? Though the studio has been testing young actresses and no one is set, there are persistent rumors that Stewart looms large as a potential lead. Mortensen surfaces in the lead of that movie after Michael Fassbender committed to the Ridley Scott-directed Prometheus with Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. Ironically, Theron is also starring in Huntsmen as the Evil Queen. Stay tuned...

The Hollywood Reporter Is Kristen Stewart the fairest of them all?
The Twilight star is on the list for the role of Snow White in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman.
The movie, being directed by Rupert Sanders, is in deep casting mode, with Viggo Mortensen entering negotiations to play the Huntsman earlier Wednesday. Charlize Theron is in negotiations to play the evil queen.
Stewart is a name that Universal has kept coming back to since acquiring the project even as it went through a series of screen tests with actresses such as Riley Keough, Felicity Jones and Alicia Vikander. Emily Browning tested this past weekend (Stewart has reached a point in her career where testing isn't required).

Stewart, arguably one of the biggest stars in the world thanks to the Twilight movies, has focused on indie projects in between the vampire romancers, and this could become her first studio project since becoming a name. It also would put her in the shoes of an iconic character.  The Gersh-repped actress is currently shooting the Breaking Dawn movies, but the Snow White team has been making repeated overtures even as late as last week

More from ThePlaylist Update: Deadline reports that Kristen Stewart “looms large as a potential lead” in the role of Snow White in “Snow White And The Huntsman.” Uh, not much more than that other than confirmation of rumors that have been making the rounds, but certainly a much different choice that relatively smaller names that have been mentioned up until now.

That was fast. Michael Fassbender is officially out of Universal‘s hotly-tipped “Snow White and the Huntsman” (he took Ridley Scott‘s “Prometheus” instead) and evidently a replacement has already been found. Viggo Mortensen is reportedly in talks to join in the fantasy re-imagining that newcomer Rupert Sanders is helming. Notice that Charlize Theron is only mentioned to be in talks in Variety‘s report, because, as we’ve been saying for weeks now, she’s not officially locked in like many have assumed (and like Fassbender, she may take a “Prometheus” role which would likely see her exit the project as well).

Written by Evan Daugherty, the script was high up on the 2010 Blacklist pages, and this new spin on the popular fairy tale sees the titular huntsman (Mortensen) being hired by the evil queen (Theron, if she decides to take the role) to track down her runaway stepdaughter, the fairest in all the land. When he realizes that the queen intends to kill Snow White, he helps her escape, and the pair go on the run. Apparently, the huntsman and Snow White will be chained together for a good portion of the film, and there is still a handsome prince who will win the fair lady’s heart.

Actresses such as Riley Keough, Felicity Jones (who now has Sundance buzz from the hit indie “Like Crazy”—it was bought by Paramount), Bella Heathcoat and Alicia Vikander are all up-and-coming actresses that have reportedly been up for the role, but no one has officially nabbed the part yet. “Snow White and the Huntsman” already has a Dec. 21, 2012 release date and is aiming to shoot this summer. Theron and Mortensen co-starred together briefly in “The Road” in 2009.

GossipCop Kristen Stewart's name is at the center of rumors surrounding Snow White and the Huntsman.
Right now, the Twilight Saga actress “looms large” for the title character role, according to Deadline. Due to scheduling conflicts, Viggo Mortensen has become the most likely Huntsman, replacing Michael Fassbender.

Charlize Theron is attached to the project as the Evil Queen. Rupert Sanders is due to direct. Gossip Cop is looking into the Stewart casting rumor, but it’s still extremely early in the process, with most major pieces still in flux.

CNNShowbiz Kristen Stewart to Play Snow White? Sure, Kristen Stewart can hold her own against vampires and werewolves, but poison apples? We may soon find out, as rumors swirl that the "Twilight" actress is in talks to star in the upcoming thriller "Snow White and the Huntsman."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal has screen tested up-and-comers such as Riley Keough ("The Runaways") and Emily Browning ("Sucker Punch") for the lead in the live-action fairy tale, but is keen on having Stewart, 20, play the damsel in distress.

Though the studio is trying to woo Stewart, she's been shooting the last "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" film and has not yet committed to the project.

Meanwhile, Viggo Mortensen is reportedly in negotiations to play "Snow White's" titular huntsman, who is the focus of the movie and protects Snow White from the evil queen. Charlize Theron is currently the favorite to play that role.

Coincidentally, Julia Roberts is also set to play the evil queen in a rival film, "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White."
Hollywood.com Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen Lining Up for 'Snow White'
Meanwhile, Snow White's part is a more interesting situation. Sources indicate that Universal has been screen testing untried youths for the iconic role, much like Paramount Pictures did (with great success) for True Grit. However, Heat Vision claims that Kristen Stewart is not only a front runner, but is being aggressively courted by the studio. The Twilight star supposedly is such a commodity that she's not even required to screen test, so she may just need to make her decision and we could have our star.

I could personally see both of these actors in the respective roles. Both are major stars, especially with genre audiences. Their involvement, in addition to Theron's, adds a bit of prestige to an otherwise mainstream project that would be less intriguing with a cast of relative unknowns. Adding in established stars gives it a dynamic that will undoubtedly work in its favor. Stewart, though most known for vampire romances, is a fine actress who's been playing her cards right, taking on lots of indie fare to balance the box office might of The Twilight Saga, while Mortensen is a respected thespian and a bankable lead thanks to The Lord of the Rings and his acclaimed recent work with David Cronenberg.

Snow White and the Huntsmen has been fast tracked by the studio as its already got a December 21st 2012 release date and its competing with Relativity's rival Snow White picture, which has Tarsem Singh at the helm.

MTV HollywoodCrush Kristen Stewart Eyed for Snow White and the Huntsman.' There have been many, many actresses offered the titular role of Snow White in "Snow White and the Huntsman," an upcoming action flick from Universal. First Saoirse Ronan, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning were offered the part, then Riley Keough (you know, granddaughter of Elvis Presley) was thought to be in the lead. Suddenly Universal changed their minds and decided they wanted to go with a relatively unknown actress (like Felicity Jones or Alicia Vikander), but still there are reports that "Sucker Punch" star Emily Browning tested for the role this weekend.

But apparently, Universal really wants Kristen Stewart. According to The Hollywood Reporter, KStew is the actress that Universal keeps coming back to to portray the fairest of them all. And since she hasn't booked any films for after "Breaking Dawn," this might be the project for her.

Universal is still on the hunt for their Huntsman, though. At first it was supposed to be either Tom Hardy or Johnny Depp, but when both of them passed it seemed that "X-Men: First Class" actor Michael Fassbender was the man for the job. But THR is also reporting that he has passed on the project, and that Viggo Mortensen entered negotiations to play the role on Wednesday.

Fortunately the process for finding the film's evil queen Ravenna has been a bit less complicated. After Angelina Jolie passed on the project, Charlize Theron picked it up. Even though she hasn't signed the paperwork yet, Charlize has stuck with the role for three months, so we hope she doesn't decide to drop it now.

An updated take on the Brothers Grimm tale, "Snow White and the Huntsman" follows Snow White after the evil queen Ravenna calls upon Eric, the huntsman, to try to kill her (think: the beginning of the Disney version). Eric, who is haunted by the death of his wife by a white wolf, goes off to kill the innocent princess but then has a change of heart. He decides to mentor her and teach her to fight off Ravenna, thus turning her into a total badass. The two of them won't serve as love interests (she still has her prince), but apparently they will be chained up to each other for part of the film after they escape a pair of bounty hunters.

I personally think Emily Browning would be better served in this role than Kristen, especially after she displays her kick-butt side in "Sucker Punch." Plus, she has a better look for the role. But I think it's obvious what Universal is trying to do repeatedly turning to Kristen for the part. She is without a doubt one of the hottest young stars in Hollywood right now thanks to "The Twilight Saga," and by bringing her on board they're automatically expanding the audience that will likely be interested in the film.

@aimzers, Nina Have you seen the rushes, trailer of Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood? Our fave fairytale characters are now fierce and can possibly kick ass, too. Gone are the 'Disney' images that we're used to.

I wish she will consider it if it will be offer to her... I love to see her in big project and I think she will be a gorgeous Snow White!
... and why do some think she will not do this type of film???!

aimzers said...

Yeah, I was comparing it to the Alice in Wonderland that came out in just a little while ago with Johnny Depp. That kinda had that dark vibe going. I dont know, I guess Id have to see more on it before Id really be able to say or not.

But just based off of that I just cant see it. Im sure my mind could be changed though!

I heard this rumor a few months ago when they first decided to make this film and while I think physically Kristen would be perfect for it (because of the white flawless skin, and the dark hair) I don't think she will get it or knows if she will even want it. I would love to see her do this role, but something tells me they are going to pick a lesser known actress to portray Snow White.

Speaking of casting, it wouldn't hurt to try to get Johnny Depp in there somehow. LOL!

@Anon 11.55 This rumor has been going around for months but when the likes of Nikke Finke, The Hollywood Reporter, The Playlist sound off about it - its time to blog...

@Robstenation I agree that the "Disney" image is gone but you have to understand that Kristen is a diverse actress! She will more than likely want to step away from the fantasy genre for a while after Twilight to try other things plus this project just wouldn't match her unique choices in films

Wasn't there a James Woods project about a female marine in Kristen's pipeline? Or has that fallen by the wayside, does anyone know? Also haven't heard anything about Rob's "Unbound Captives" in a while. Do you think that's a no-go?

1. Kristen is an actress. She has said in interviews she's open to all types of roles. Just bc she's done a lot of darker indies doesn't mean that's all she wants to do.

2. This fantasy movie is nothing like Twilight's Bella. Snow White is tough and learns from Viggo how to save herself. It actually a great female character for her.

3. There is an amazing uber A list cast being put together. The studio clearly seems to be going all out for this movie.

Only Kristen knows what she'll do but I hope she goes for it. It's time to see Kristen kick a little butt.:)

As far as I'm concerned she'd put a whole new spin on SW & make it look damn good while she's doin' it too,lol...Oh gawd, I've been having these images of her in my head as VampBella every single day now, cause I know she's working hard for all of us to bring it to life. To say I'm excited about that is putting it mildly. She knows how much it means to all of us. I really want this to be true because I want to see DomesticStew cook tortilla soup and bake loquat pies for the dwarfs! On a serious note, why all the negativity? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the twilight saga the only fantasy genre she has ever done? And she played a human! If this project is true, this is as diverse as she can be as an actor. Something totally different to what she has ever done before and to me is very exciting!

ah why not yeah if the script is good, she is versatile and her skin tone is perfect. most prob it will be a dark version not really for children like alice in wonderland(i took my son he was scared.)who knows we will just have to wait. she had to do 'An American girl' as well no? so it depends on her schedule.

sweetrobsten said...

Well @nina and @aimzers I have to disagree with u guys.sorry.but I have to admit Kristen’s face are not to “Disney”-ish right?BUT this movie is all about that dark, opposite “Disney” films.and I LOVE Kristen!she can do anything and can pull it off!i think we should just stop imagining her with a pretty, long, fluff, snow white gowns.because I do bealive if Kristen plays in this movie, the make-up and designers department would change Kristen just like the director wants.
And S is right,I mean look at the “red riding-hood” trailer, the characters are not a ‘sweet, humble’ Disney characters.it’s more like a badass!and I think CH does well on the film(so far)I guest.and guys, just imagine charlize theron and viggo mortensen plays as the evil and the huntsman?!it will be EPIC!i lovvee VM since lord of the rings as Aragorn!his so handsome that I always blabbing around to my parents about him every time I watch his film.lol.and CT…..i mean what could I say?she’s beautiful, talented, and smart and have gorgeous green eyes just (almost)like kristen’s. I love her in MONSTER film.she so GOOOOOD playing her characters.that I’m so happy when she won an Oscar for her performances in moster.
And I REALLY HOPE *finger crossed* Kristen would consider this role for hers.because this character is not that too sweet snow white “Disney”character thing.look at mia wasikowska who plays alice in ‘alice in wonderland’films.her performances is really the OPPOSITE alice characters thing.it’s a serious, fierce but fragile alice charecters in her performances.and the audience seems to like it but I love it.because it’s very different from the alice characters based on the book.
Kristen, too, can act as a nice not too strong characters.if u just imagining her in WTTR and TR than u just still don’t believe about her great actings-skill.So still finger crossed here and whoever person is that just wanna say this role is not fit or not her thing is.please just don’t say it.because we don’t know Kristen and now is just between her and her decision if she wants to take this role. Even if she love playing an indie movies doesn’t mean that she ALWAYS want to do an indie movies type.if she wants to play a big budget film in the near future(or maybe this)than we def gonna exited to see this movie comes out.
Okay my point is that we should just support her and rob whatever they choose on their films individuality and together
Kiss and hug

Please, please be true!!!! Kristen's the fairest of them all acting wise she can deliver this role with justice.

I hope she'll consider this project because she's worth to become Snow White more than any other actress in Hollywood land.

Anonymous said...

this movie is a like a feminist reimagining of the classic tale-instead of waiting for her prince to save her, the hunter will teach her how to protect herself and she will have a direct showdown with the queen at the end. Kristen is PERFECT for this role, because she has the delicate features of a Snow White, but open a can of kick ass easily too, a contrast with that china doll face of hers. this could be totally awesome, interesting for her to play for a studio project, and is being weighted by other big named actors ala WFE for Robert. This would be such a great next movie for her because it's mainstream yet creative and allows for a strong female character.

I would like to see her in a sexy and serious character something like a law school student who use her intelligence and beauty to find the case in very critical subject, or even a little political or an advocate. I think she needs to work with oscar winners, best director, best script writer and best story.

RTP_KJS_Lover said...

I think this would be an awesome role for Kristen. Working with such established actors as Viggo (again)and Charlize (Oscar winner) only helps her with her craft. Career wise, for Kristen to have a blockbuster outside of Twi would be wonderful. I think (hope) she will have the kind of career where she mixes the big studio roles with the little indie roles and is able to please not only herself, but her fans who want to see her in both types of movies.

I also love that most of the articles regarding this are so positive of Kristen portraying Snow White.

lia18 said...

Ohh!! I really hope this is true!
It would be awesome for Kristen's career! I think this could be a HUGE step for her career! Working on another big studio movie would help Kristen to be seen as a SOLID leading lady outside of Twilight. It seems to be a completly different take on the Snow White that we all know, it seems really interesting! And with Viggo Mortenssen and Charlize Theron? Hell, yeah! Please let it be true! Kristen!! SAY YES!

Anonymous said...

@Delle1, that sentence said it all for me too. It sounds like if she wants the role it's hers. That must be awesome for her. It would definitely be different than anything else she has ever done. It sounds interesting though! If Charlize is in, the script must have real substance.

Wonder who the prince would be? Wait, Kristen already has her prince...lol. And what about the dwarfs?! I so hope she does this!

Anonymous said...

No, Kristen. All I can say is NO. That could be the beginning of the end for her. Snow White? No.

Enough fairy tales.

Anonymous said...

@1221

"The beg of the end?"

Yes. Bc working with 2 oscar nominated actors would be horrible. Kristen has been in the business for over 10 yrs. She's worked before Twi, she'll work after Twi. If she wants to be Snow White, she'll do that too. Fans don't have to like every choice she makes but it is her's to make and she has done a pretty great job right along. JS.

Anonymous said...

This is a gr8 proj. It's produced by the people that did Alice in Wonderland. It has Oscar nominated actors attached with a major studio backing it.

People keep talking about the other roles Kristen should do I'm sorry but she's 20. The roles you are talking about go to older actresses. Fans need to be realistic. There aren't a loads of young 20 something female led non rom com movies being made. Or she could be in some of those movies but they'd be a man's story and she'd be his girlfriend. This is a major opp for Kristen and I hope she goes for it.

Argh I'm late again!

It's cool to have some news about Kristen's possible future project. I heard about this rumor a little while ago. It would be very different from what she has done before, which is a good thing. So Universal wants Kristen mmh, now the ball is in her court apparently... KStew the princess, teehee! No, that sounds like an interesting & surprising idea and bb girl can rock any roles.
Oh man, don't make me start with "Alice in Wonderland"... I was so disappointed by this movie. I am a big fan of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but something was missing... it was too stereotyped ( purposely or not ) and I didn't feel the crazy & original style of Tim Burton. I guess I'm just old school when it comes to his movies :p
Anyway, if Kristen decided to make "Snow White and the Huntsman", it would mean the script is good. I trust her and can't see her making some dull blockbuster, neither Viggo Mortensen. This guy is brilliant, and it could be another opportunity to work with him. Plus, the story sounds kinda cool, with its feminist vibe. It seems really funny & inspiring, so why not. IMO fairy tales remakes or not, as long as the movie is great, it's all good!

Yeah it could be helpful for her career if she chooses to make some big movies between her indies. She's very good in these little stories which are very touching, full of drama and sometimes dealing with harsh topics. But a bigger & great movie with big names attached to it could enable her to last in Hollywood maybe. I think it depends on what she wants in the long run and what kind of movies/stories she is offered. I certainly will follow her and Rob's career no matter what, they have always shown their great tastes in movies.
My selfish dream would be that she works on a crazy/weird project. Like, the types of movies Jean-Pierre Jeunet ( "Amélie Poulain" ) or Michel Gondry ( "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" ) can make. These two guys are pure story tellers and most of their movies are so poetic. Or let's say... Kristen working with Quentin Tarantino or Tim Burton ( not on a Disney remake obviously :p ). Man, it would be awesome! I wonder if this "Snow White" remake will have a poetic side... with a badass heroin I don't think so :D Well, let's see if Kristen takes the part!

Sorry for the monologue and thanks S for the news, it's been quite calm in the last few days!

@takeitoff Oh ' Eternal Sunshine of the SPotless Mind' is one of my fave movies. Its just perfect. The love story is so perfect and not all gets it. Love it more for that.

@TS: Amen to the karma, may it kick all the haters' asses one day soon! I read a few of those articles with comments today, too, and it is no wonder that Kris has her guard up so much, with all that hatred flying around her. Haters are always going to hate, no matter how ridiculous it is I guess, but her best revenge is to keep doing what she loves with her "Who gives a f---" attitude, and the haters will find the next victim to feed on eventually..I just want to give her a hug on days like this, though, you know?

@Sharilee, definitely, at least we know she is getting hugs from a very good looking brit we all know and love!! She just seems like such a kind giving soul, it just makes my heart hurt reading all the hate. Anyway, I will not be reading comments anywhere but here for a while (can't take it). Coming here and reading all the positive things from all the amazing fans, and reading posts S, puts up from other actors praising her makes me feel so much better.

I try not to venture elsewhere, the hate (not just for her) is everywhere. Ppl are just ravenous and I am shocked at ppl who are Twi fans---the girl plays Bella excatly as its written and adds a certain determination to the character on screen. Think how many actresses we could have had and it would have been crap...and without her no Rob as Edward. Sorry I had to rant that I agree with you all.

She is amazing, I wasn't fully aware until we watched TR and WOW! Even my hubs, who intially had to be pulled to watch, said she was really good and voluntarily added WTR to our Netflix account! (Yah...I think he likes her now. Also liked looking at her legs on PCA!MEN!) He still won't watch Remember Me...I think I will pull him in with Cosm. after Rob does that!

I think K would be an awesome Snow White...give little girls (ok over PG 13 girls) a heroin they can respect! I hope she doesn't read the shi* ppl write because most is probably written by young girls who have not had time to develop the art of intelligent crictical perspective. From a psychological perspective I'd say most haters are projecting their own insercurites outward into anger and jealousy. Sorry I will get off the soap box now!

I'd love to see Kristen as a badass Snow White. As much as I love her indie movies I think she should do bigger movies too. It would be something completley different and challenging for her.

I am sure she would do a great job in this movie (as always). She`d make a perfect Snow White. If it is really going to happen I`ll go watch it! I also agree to the comments stating that the fairy tale stories/movies have changed. The contents`ve reached a different level, more like a thriller or horror movie.
Well, there is no confirmation for it yet anyway , so just wait and see.
