USA Today Interview with the Twilight Saga producer, Wyck Godfrey
Q: Where does the story split in half?
A: “We basically want to take the audience through the emotional part of Bella’s journey as she becomes a vampire. The first part will cover the wedding, the honeymoon and the birth.” The film ends just before she embarks on her supernatural transformation.
Q: The book has three segments, two of which present Bella’s point of view and a middle that’s devoted to the perspective of her rejected werewolf suitor, Jacob (Taylor Lautner). How is that handled?
A: “The story will break from her and follow Jacob throughout the course of the movie as he struggles with his own dilemma. There is a sense that as Bella and the Cullens (Edward’s makeshift vampire clan) deal with her pregnancy, the world is still turning outside with Jacob.”
Q: Why was Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning filmmaker best known for his musicals as the screenwriter of 2002′s Chicago and the director of 2006′s Dreamgirls, selected as the director of the finale?
A: “These films have the most difficult stuff from a performance standpoint. With his history of directing, I can’t think of anyone who would be better at bringing out the best in an actor.” Plus, the director, who did the 1995 sequel to Candyman, is a fright-fare enthusiast. “He has an appetite for the genre and a passion for the Twilight books and movies.”
Q: Considering what goes on during the torturous birth process, how can the rating be PG-13?
A: With Twilight’s core of under-18 fans, “it would be a crime against our audience to go R-rated.” However, “this is based on a much more mature book. We need to progress and be more sophisticated.”
A compromise: Having the bloody, bone-crushing delivery be seen only through Bella’s eyes. “She is looking through the haze, experiencing pain and everything rushing around her. We only see what she sees.”
Q: How is the long-awaited consummation of Edward and Bella’s love portrayed?
A: Even though their physical relationship goes way beyond what was shown in the first three films, “it does not become soft porn. It is a legitimate and important part of the movie, romantic and sensual.”
Q: At the end of Breaking Dawn, about 70 or so vampires from around the world gather to face off with the Cullens and their allies plus Jacob’s wolf pack. How can you keep both portions of the storytelling equally compelling?
A: “The second half is more of an action film in terms of life-and-death stakes.” But the domestic moments of the first film possess an emotional punch. “There are the pangs of newlywed tension that occur that are relatable even in a fantasy film. Marriage is not quite the experience that they thought it was.”
Q: Is there any chance that Condon could sneak in a musical number?
A: There might be traditional dancing at the wedding. But don’t expect any of the wolf pack to suddenly howl a tune or do a soft-shoe shuffle.
Although, as Godfrey jokes, “We just had a whole line of actors marching toward the camera. We could have them practice a chorus line with vampires doing kicks.”

I hope they don't focus too much on Jacob.
awwwwwwwwwwwwwww a family pic?hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm will we survive this?
ok producers just hear this we want edwella not too much jacob.
yes!!! everything about bd sounds perfect to me. although i would have liked to see the birth scene outside of bellas eyes, im sure it will be amazing!
Just where I thought they would end Part 1...cool info S. Too bad it won't be "soft porn"..Ha Ha Wyck! So looking forward to BD!!!!..hope R&K are keeping focused and doing their homework!!! Ha Ha again!End of Jan!!!YES!!!
I agree with everyone else.....hope it won't be too much focka on Jacob, we sant Edward and Bella, aaaaaall the way! :)
But the break in the movies is exactly where I thought (and hoped) it would be, sounds great!
A little worried though about what Wyck said about the marriage, that it won't be what they expect, sounds like they are trying to put in more obstacles and problems for Edward and Bella, when they are infact supposed to be gloriously happy together! Oh well, I'm sure it will work out fine! :) Very excited, it's all coming together now!
I hope that in the middle part at of the movie, that Jacob's stories is still there, but not that we will just see the middle part from just his perspective. Like they did in the books, I hated that her pregnancy was seen from his view, I think it should be both, both from Bella, Jacob, and Edward's, I want to see edward and bellas thoughts.. But i remember melissa said that it was not just from taylors perspective, so I hope they stick to that.
I am actually looking forward to taylor s part, I thinks its going to be so sad, i will probably cry a little, and I am looking forward to see his sweet moments with the baby..
Great news!I so can't wait for these movies to hit the big screen!! Wow. Movies will be epic ones.
Aww. The photoshoot with the family<3 I hope posters are better than the previous ones.. Not that Jacob/Bella/Edward position once again :D It would be great to have posters with Jacob and Renesmee, then of course Bella/Edward/Renesmee, then !! the one with just Bella and Edward.
“There are the pangs of newlywed tension that occur that are relatable even in a fantasy film. Marriage is not quite the experience that they thought it was.”
Hmmmm?!!
All sounds pretty exciting!! I find the portion of the book that's from Jacob's perspective to be the slowest personally, but maybe it'll be easier to "watch" than it was to read. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Glad Wyck is keeping us in the loop as much as he can since we're waiting another 10 months to see the film....**sigh**
I'm gonna make a guess about the "marriage tension"! Maybe it's gonna be in the island, sort of her demanding sex from him and like asking "is that what our marriage will be like?"! Maybe something like that, but it's only an idea!
Also, a little worried about the "romantic and sensual" comment! You know what, if it reaches "Remember Me" and a little more than that, we will be delighted! Just let us see some leg hitching and wrapping!! haha!! (seriously, though, we totally want something like that!)!
Just have patience for 5 months: First trailer, MTV Movie Awards! 1000% guaranted!! But, by the way, please lovely people of the awards, when they present the trailer don't make them say one of those cheesy and totally fake-looking speeches, like they did in the previous MTV awards when they were showing trailers and clips! :)
Wonderful, newsy update, thanks so much!
Agree with other commenters - hope it's not too much Jake POV... Maybe more of a visual thing than a lot of dialog?
Happy thinking of E, B & R having their little family pix taken starting tomorrow - those should be beautiful. A long wait tho!
Have a great w/e, Sweetie, lots of love, red
Oh please not too much of Jacob (again). Taylor seems a nice guy but in the films he drives me nuts, there is just too much of him. I totally agreed with Rob's comment on the Eclipse dvd (pushy Jacob and Bella going away with him, I felt sorry for Edward). Then again, I'm probably to protective of E&B and R&K, it doesn't feel right when they are kissing other costars (yes I know I'm a sad old bitch)
Where does the newly wed tension come in in the book? He means the second half because he points out that it won't be just about the action and fighting. I hope they don't just start adding domestic issues for the sake of it or to make it more relateable. The whole point of their marriage in the book is that they feel more connected than ever but also equal now that she's a vampire too, a new born who still has stong desires for her husband when she should be more focused on blood. They feel complete. They don't represent an everyday marriage as their love is so extreme which is what we love about them. There's no need to add silly little domestic issues. I just hope that isn't an added focus.
M
I really hope by "marital problems" in Edward/Bella marriage that they don't mean they're going to focus on the Edward/Bella/Jacob love traingle once again in Breaking Dawn.
About the newlywed tension, I think its about bellas pregnancy, she and edward have different opinions
about that. He wants to protect her and want her to give away the baby so she will not be hurt/ die, and she understands its a real baby( not a monster) and wants keep it and wants to sacrifice her one life for the baby..
We know there will be tension between theme because of that, but we al know that edward changes his mind and that they become this sweet little family...
Ha now we're talking! :)
I kinda liked to read Jacob's book because he was so getting on my nerves in Eclipse & the second half of NM... finally in BD you could understand him & his role better. He is quite sarcastic and the voice of reason in the Saga, moving the story forward with complicated & tense situations. But at the same time, I don't really care about the character alone, symbolically ok but he's too immature & intolerant & pretentious, the contrary of Edward actually - that's why I never understood what Bella found appealing about J until Renesmee, ew. So yeah, he's a useful character but I'm with you guys. Still hope in BD 1 the points of view will sometimes change during J's part. Too much J = me bored :p
As for the rest, well, we want blood, we want sex, they can't make dull movies. Of course there is a teen audience but it's the story, if it's too shoking for them then why in the first place were they able to read the book mh ?
Anyway, I bet there will be little changes here & there as usual but I'm still confident, the first 3 movies were good so I'm sure they won't screw up the last 2, having such epic material, great director & actors! Poor them for dealing with a fussy fandom haha!
Thanks S for posting & thanks Wyck for giving us new stuff to discuss!
It's felt sad more and more,, it is not our expect to see tri plot movie. I wish to go back first twilight that is really pure and nature loving story that is most fans are invloved it.
HI! to Anonymous 0901am ITA with you..I've had enough of this Triangle..Just the Thought of this Happening is making me feel SICK!!..I know Jacob is an intergral part but please not to the point that it will appear that his jacob character is the LEAD!.PLEAZZZE..I've had enough of that in NM/Eclipse..oh! Why oh !Why can he just disappear like Taylor and do some 'PUSH_UPs' somewhere...far awayyyyy from Edward and Bella..as far away as possible!!anyway ,S..sorry for this..this is JMO!
I THINK the marriage issues is the most troubling thing that wyck has alluded to. What marriage problems? I need to go reread BD - I don't remember any. All I remember is lots of sex. NOTE - these troubles are AFTER she turns according to Wyck. The only trouble I remember is them both being furious at Jacob for imprinting with the baby.
I think anyone reading this blog is aware of how it goes down. And gawd, I can't wait to see them!!!
OK - one more thing = Spoilers.
By this point, is there ANYONE out there that haven't read BD and are waiting for the movie to find out what happens?
Wouldn't it be adorable if they did like a family portrait of Edward and Bella all touchy and then Jacob holding renesmee!! I don't know I just thought that would make a cute picture!
Or... If they could like progress Renesmee to her teens and then show her and Jacob together on like a greeting card! That would be adorable!
I really trust this guy with these movies. He as been good to us so far, and I don't think he'll let us down.
It all sounds good, except I would love an R-rated version, lol. And please, please don't focus on Jacob. It's all about Bella and Edward.
The only thing that bugs me about this article is that the "core" of Twilight fans are under 18. I disagree. Maybe originally, but not anymore. I hate that this franchise is still pegged with the teen or tween tag. There are a lot of us, older than 18.
I think Bill Condon will not do any of us wrong, and I can't wait to see his interpretation of BD on the big screen!! I'm going to go in the theater with zero expectations except to see a wedding, a birth, and Bella turn into a vampire. In my opinion, everything else is up for interpretation, and I'm excited to see how it all comes together!! With that being said, these movies are never going to please everyone, so I hope people can just keep an open mind about them.
He said that the "domestic moments of the FIRST film possess an emotional punch. There are the pangs of newlywed tension that occur that are relatable even in a fantasy film." and so on. I think he just meant about Bella getting preggers and who they argue and tensoin ensues over that. They didn't think they could get preggers, and deal with her becoming a vamp and having a baby that is not fully human. JMO...it's all good!!
Maria
"It does not become soft porn" - Why the hell not?!?!?! LOL Why can't it be like RM or The Notebook sex scenes?? They were both pretty hot & had the pg 13 rating, right??
I hope they don't focus too much on Jacob either....they already did that w/ NM & Eclipse...WE NEED MORE OF EDWARD & BELLA IN BD!!!
I'm still excited though!!!
I think the last two movies are going to be EPIC!!! I can't wait...I liked the book. I know some didn't like the book but I did..I felt it tied everything together. I, like others, hope they don't focus on Jacob too too much but I understand that they need to add his part in this as well.
I can't wait for to see photos from the shoot..those are going to be awesome. I wonder if Mackenzie will get to do some promotional stuff for the movie with Kristen & Rob. That would be cute...she is young though so she can't do too much but it would be nice to see all three of them on a talk show. I hope Mackenzie does the Ellen show...Ellen is great with kids and you know she will get some good stuff (on set secrets) out of Mackenzie..HAHA!!
Oops it's me again, silly me didn't read that carefully : "The story will break from her and follow Jacob throughout the course of the movie"
So it's not just about Jacob's book... I guess they will add the scene when J leaves after he got the invitation for E&B wedding or stuff like that, which seems not a bad idea as long as the movie is mainly focused on E&B ( SM I'm watching you!! :D )
And no I highly doubt the famous love triangle will continue in BD... at the end of Eclipse - the book & movie - it's clearly over, as Bella is like "I love Edward, I want to be a vampire, Bye bye Jacob!" and FINALLY J gets it, or almost.
I also think Wyck was referring to the "I won't sleep with you again until you're a vamp" and the pregnancy as the pangs of newlywed tension. I'm not sure if it's relatable or domestic moments haha but IDK what else it could be. I definitely can't picture E&B arguing over unimportant things, it's not their style, plus it would be boring for us to watch. They didn't even let Bella cook for her father in the previous movies, so why now?
Ha sorry, I'm not worried nor have I many definite expectations for BD but there are so many questions about possible little or big changes/additions... Can't wait to have the answers!!
Why are they deviating from the books for the last film????
All ready a big mistake that will screw up the saga.
Thank goodness they are bringing Carter Burwell back!!!!
Why can't they go back to making Rob look like he did
in Catherine Hardwick's Twilight???? I hated Rob's hair style at the PCA's!!!!!
He was sooooooo gorgeous in Twilight!!!!!!!!! Look at this photo above - mind blowing!!!!
*Spoilers*
As always everyone's getting upset with very little information. I am equally as guilty--I was all over the wedding ring situation when they first started shooting in Brazil. And I learned my lesson--rings appeared later, no need to worry.
As to the "marriage isn't quite what they thought is was going to be" If you read it correctly, Wyck was definitely talking about the first film trying to explain where the tension of the first film will lie. The newlywed tension probably stems from Bella & Edward disagreeing first over having sex again and then over keeping the baby. At one point in the book, Edward actually says "We're(Edward & Carlisle) the ones she's (Bella)afraid of". Marriage isn't what they thought it would be because they didn't anticipate the pregnancy which leads to discourse. Also maybe there is some tension because Bella wants Jacob around a lot, which will be necessary to add to the explanation of "imprinting". That's going to be a tricky thing to portray so I suspect hints to explain will be peppered throughout the movie. (Yes, there are people who only see the movie--I've tried to explain to my sister-in-law that she has to read the books before BD or she'll never understand it all--imprinting, wolf backs, witnessing for Nessie).
Which leads me to my comments about Jacob. We need to face it, these films have 3 lead characters (and have for the past two movies). If Jacob wasn't involved the series would have ended at Twilight. Yes, the love triangle elements should lessen and move to a more familial love in the second, but Jacob needs to still be in love with Bella in the first BD so that he will tolerate being around the vampires just to be with her to elude to the imprinting and to grant immunity to Edward so he can save/turn Bella. Plus it offers a much more emotional impact during the birth--2 enemies working together, desperately trying to save the woman they love. I think it will be dramatic. I also hope they show the part where Edward convinces Jacob to try to persuade Bella to terminate the pregnancy and she could have a baby with Jacob. I think it speaks volumes about Edward's desperation and the lengths they would both go to to save Bella.
I also think the Jacob/Rosalie relationship will be fun to see. But I am really looking forward to the Edward/Jacob relationship developing over the two movies. First as allies to save Bella, then as family in the second. Because ironically Edward is really the only non-wolf who can fully understand Jacob's imprinting on Renesmee because he can see it and understand it from Jacob's mind.
I know it seems like I'm championing Jacob, but really I'm just speaking to the comments about leaving him out. I wish all fans could look at this as a great complex, multifaceted story. Some fans can't even get past their love for Rob/Kristen to see the characters ie. hating to see them kiss other people on screen and in other movies.
Final thoughts:
1.Bill Condon did a great job taking very abstract ideas from Chicago (which was written for the stage) and translated it wonderfully to film. So I'm very excited to see what he will bring to BD.
2. I don't want "soft porn", Wyck, but please don't leave anything steamy on the cutting room floor--that's what the DVD is for.
3. Already looking forward to Kristen & Rob's commmentary on the BD DVDs. So sad that I enjoy the awkwardness and their embarrassment watching themselves.
4.Bring on the vampire chorus line!! LOL
Sorry for the long post, S, but the singular focus when discussing the storyline drives me CRAZY!!
"Marriage is not quite the experience that they thought it was". Huh? I don't remember reading anything like that in the book.
Summit, I think you owe it to us to put out a director's cut DVD with all the goodies that you can't show in a PG13 movie.
SM said the movies would be v different if Wyck were directing them. I think with BC and wyck as a team we will get what we want. A little of everything for everyone. Surely SM knows its the last movie it has to be epic so she just needs to put on her big girl panties and deal :)(no offense)
Hell, we want the soft porn, don´t speak for us Wyck, you are a cool guy, fug the teens!
sorry, it´s my gutter mind talking.
Karina.
This makes me so excited, I just can't wait, all the trailers coming up and all the beautiful photo's and the press tour and interviews.
Well, I'm gonna try to hold on to my confidence in BC & see what happens & how it all unfolds...HMMMM, I've got questions in mind already tho....WE SHALL SEE...tanx f/this S!
*Spoilers*
@Misty you've given this a lot of thought and I appreciate your long comments.I agree Jacob is integral part of the BD book...he is a foil for Edward in many ways throughout the story...I too enjoyed Edward's diaglogue with Jacob during Bella's pregnancy and I think it does eloquently show the extent of his love for Bella to propose to share her with Jacob if she ends the pregnancy. It also shows Bella how much Edward loves her...Jacob's humor is needed throughout the story as well as comic relief from the drama of the pregnancy, vamp friends, and Volturi.
Personally, my LOVE is really for the E&B relationship (I'm not into vampires or werewolves outside of Twilight)but Jacob is so needed as a friend in BD. I also really hope they keep the scene when Edward hears Renesmee for the first time and this crushes Jacob.Edward feels his pain and throws his car keys to him so that he can escape.Would love to see Rob with this..and his burning man face when Bella becomes pregnant.R&T already have a close bond so I am looking forward to see how this translates to E&J.
Wish we had clarity and not through Bella's cloudy eyes to see E pump Bella's heart after birth with his venom and so desperately wants to save her etc...that's a really hot part of the story!
I could go on and on about the E&B parts I want left in the movie....
*Twilight is not just for teen...I'm guessing most regular posters here are at least 20+
*yes, please Wyck put all deleted too steamy scenes in the DVD extras!
oops sorry for the long post S...so excited for BD!
Oh..forgot to add..So happy that Carter Burwell is back!!!
So, is it just me? Why is no one else wondering why the Cullens are in fight training? Have I completely forgot the plot in Breaking Dawn? I don't remember a fight in Breaking Dawn. Have I lost my marbles? I read the book 5 times this summer....
PrettySparklies <3
I agree w/everyone, please don't have that much focus on Jacob. Snooooz!
And yes, we want soft porn! We've been waiting for 3 flippin movies for that!
Its cool that Carter Burwell is back. Bill- could you PLEASE have Edward play the piano for Bella again? Pretty pretty please with a cherry on top?! That would be so epic!
Wooohooo Burwell is back! I like his moody songs. I also like alexandre and howard though. I dunno if I want to see "soft" porn because that seems so anti-twilight. Ofcourse I wanna see those 2 as much as possible but soft porn? It just has to be romantic. that's all. and for u guys
DON'T EXPECT TOOOO MUCH!
I know in advance there will be something in the movie that isn't exactly like the movie
it's stupid if almost everything has changed but people will nag about the smallest things! It can never be exactly the same!
oh yeah burwell scoring again!!!!
I hope they will use the same theme as in twilight because that set the tone of the saga and i was kinda disapointed that it wasn't in the 2 others.
I can't stop listening to " i know what you are" omg perfect
Yay! I am sooo excited that Carter Burwell is back for BD!! I loved loved loved his music so much! It was haunting and magical and just beautiful. Did I mention I loved his music? LOL.
I am very happy with the decision to end BD1 right after the birth. That makes a lot of sense for the best dramatic effect and to get everyone really excited for BD2.
One of the main things that stood out to me in this article was the reason they chose Bill Condon as the director and that was that he can bring out the best in an actor. There are so many dramatic ups and downs for all of the main characters, from extreme joy and happiness to despair, fear, and
sickness that having a director who can expertly guide each of them through those emotions, so that we as the audience get lost in the emotions of the characters too, is extremely important I think.
A romantic and sensual honeymoon scene is fine with me as long as there is definite passion and longing between them and very good lighting!! Haha!
And please absolutely NO musical numbers!! - SH
Wondering if things are really going to stick to the book, except the "marriage tension" stuff. Now it may be my Fanfiction and the true BD are blurring the lines of rememberance but I don't recall any RL marriage tension. Did I miss something...seriously help me out...footnotes or references anyone? LOL
It does sound good. I am not suprised about the "not soft core" being it was a YA novel. (Not saying disappointed...lol). But maybe someone could bring up that most of the teens who read BD will be legal by the time the 2nd movie roles out. Heck, I keep telling my husband I could pop out two more kids and have them weened by the then...not planning just saying that's a long HALE of a time!
*Sorry if posted twice...tried a couple attempts.
very interesting interview. yes. carter burwell is back. this is so exciting!
OMG I am sooo excited now, I really do not want to wait till November :( I am seriously gonna die haha.
I think BD is going to be great and is going to have all of the right elements needed :)Like Edward and Bella swooon!!!!! they are going to be soo hot in the honeymoon scenes :D gosh... I do not want to see 2 much of Jacob because this book is morre about Edward and Bella and the family, you know? Although I still love Jacob and he needs to be in it :) lol
I also got stumped with the tension part but I am still positive it will be great!! Probs just about the pregnency and bella wanting to keep her and edward not wanting to...
SOOO EXCITED going to be great :)
love S.
@Misty & Beside You, ITA with all your comments. Jacob is an integral part of the saga and his part is essential in BD. I'm certain Bill Condon will handle it all beautifully. And I'm thrilled that Carter Burwell is back to do the music! YaY! What he did for Twilight was amazing, definitely my favorite of all the scores.
To the posters above - Yes!!! Carter Burwell is back and yes, let's hope we see ROb play the piano again - so f'ing hot!!!!!!
