Update from GossipCop
There’s a chance The Twilight Saga could continue after the fifth film opens in November.
The bombshell was reportedly dropped by Jon Feltheimer, the chief executive officer of Lionsgate Entertainment, which acquired Twilight studio Summit Entertainment for $412.5 million on Friday.
“I’m anticipating Breaking Dawn – Part 2 being $700 million-plus in worldwide box office,” said Feltheimer of the final (planned) installment in the hit vampire franchise.
According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked whether Lionsgate could envision more Twilight past next fall’s fifth film, Feltheimer left the door open.
“It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn’t have ongoing value,” he said. “It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration.”
He added, “So the simple answer is, ‘Boy, I hope so.’”
It’s not clear whether a potential continuation would involve future films or a television series. Read in full at LA Times
Examiner What began as murmurs many moons ago has become a solidified deal: The Hunger Games film studio Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation has purchased Twilight Saga film studio Summit Entertainment for $412.5 million.
A Lions Gate press release (via The Wrap) on the same included the following quote from Co-Chairman and Executive Officer Jon Feitheimer and Vice Chairman Michael Burns:
“We are uniting two powerful entertainment brands, bringing together two world-class feature film franchises to establish a commanding position in the young adult market, strengthening our global distribution infrastructure and creating a scalable platform that will result in significant and accretive financial benefits to Lionsgate shareholders . . . Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger have built a remarkable organization, and we’re pleased to welcome Summit’s talented team to the Lionsgate family.”
No word yet on whether this will have any impact on the release of Summit's biggest forthcoming film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, other than the distribution company associated with its release.

Variety.com Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate have agreed to walk down the aisle, combining the town's leading minimajors in a complex cash and stock deal worth $412.5 million.
The completed deal, which has been expected to close for the past week, was announced at the close of the market Friday. Lionsgate co-chairman and CEO Jon Feltheimer told Variety that final details were worked out at 3 a.m. PST on Friday. The deal is structured as a leveraged buyout with the majority of the purchase price funded with cash on the balance sheet at Summit.
"This transaction continues Lionsgate's long-term growth strategy of building a diversified worldwide media company through a combination of disciplined, accretive strategic acquisitions and organic growth while maintaining a solid balance sheet," said Feltheimer and Burns in a joint statement. "We are uniting two powerful entertainment brands, bringing together two world-class feature film franchises to establish a commanding position in the young adult market, strengthening our global distribution infrastructure and creating a scalable platform that will result in significant and accretive financial benefits to Lionsgate shareholders."
The Lionsgate board approved the deal Tuesday, according to Feltheimer.
Summit co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said in a statement, "We believe that the combined entity will be even greater than the sum of its parts."
The announcement said both Lionsgate and Summit will continue to operate as distinct brands and "expected to continue and be active in the production and distribution of films." But it did not directly address the status of Friedman and Wachsberger. Speculation about their future has varied widely, ranging from the two taking the reins of Lionsgate's motion picture operations to departing the combined company.
Feltheimer told Variety that he expects specifics on management structure to be disclosed within the next week.
The announcement also didn't address the issue of whether there will be layoffs but Feltheimer said, "There's no question that there will be some consolidation but for many employees, this will be a tremendous opportunity."
Though Lionsgate is headquartered in Vancouver, most of its operations are in Santa Monica, a few blocks from the Summit offices. Summit has about 150 employees, Lionsgate about 500.
Lionsgate said transaction is expected to be "significantly accretive" in Lionsgate's 2013 fiscal year beginning April 1.
Beyond the Summit cash, the rest of the transaction was funded with $55 million of existing Lionsgate cash, $45 million of cash received from a newly issued series of Lionsgate convertible notes, $50 million of Lionsgate common stock and an additional $20 million of cash or stock to be issued at Lionsgate's option within 60 days.
Summit's existing term loan was refinanced with a $500 million debt facility, secured by the collateral of the Summit assets. The loan matures in 2016 but Lionsgate said it "anticipates repaying the loan well before the maturity date, due to the significant cash flow the business is expected to generate."
Burns told Variety that the fourth and fifth "Twilight" films are expected to generate "an enormous amount of cash."
The mini-majors have been negotiating exclusively with each other in recent weeks as execs sorted through the complexity of the transaction. Miramax owner Colony Capital made an offer and had been in negotiations during November and December before dropping out.
The merged entity would have more firepower in a market where the majors have scaled back on mid-budget films in favor of tentpoles and franchises -- creating an opportunity for sizable indies to fill that gap.
The union brings the "Twilight" franchise under the same roof as "The Hunger Games," which Lionsgate is banking on to revitalize its film slate. The last of the "Twilight" pics, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2," due to open Nov. 16, is likely to take in as much as $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
The first installment of what Lionsgate hopes will be a franchise based on the popular book series, "Hunger Games" opens March 23. The trailer for the pic got a boost with its target aud in running with Summit's "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," which did boffo business following its Nov. 20 domestic bow.
It's understood that a key component for Summit execs in choosing Lionsgate over Colony was that an acquisition by a public company could be attractive to investors because their shares are more liquid than a private company, provided the merger includes stock.
Since 2007, Summit co-chairs Friedman and Wachsberger have transformed Summit from a foreign sales company into a full-service production and distribution studio on the back of its successful gamble on film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's bestselling series of vampire-werewolf novels.
In April 2007, Summit arranged a $1 billion financing deal -- a transaction that would not have been possible a few months later as the financial markets began melting down.
Last March, Summit closed a $750 million financing deal -- a $550 million term loan and a $200 million revolving line of credit -- that allowed the company to unshackle itself from some of its debt, increase feature production and fund day-to-day operations. It also paid a cash distribution to its largest investors, including Friedman, Wachsberger, Participant Media, Nala Films and private equity fund Rizvi Traverse Management.
Lionsgate and Summit have had discussions about a union going back as far as fall 2008, just before the bow of the first "Twilight" pic. Those discussions resumed last fall in the wake of Lionsgate's settlement with longtime adversary Carl Icahn under which the billionaire agreed to sell off this stake end his three-year quest
Lionsgate shares appreciated by 28% in 2011 and have gained another 3% this year.
Summit execs have said recently that they expect Summit's foreign sales division to remain in operation at the upcoming Berlin and Cannes film markets.
Summit's strategy has been to release and distribute 10-12 films per year, with a focus on the midrange films that the majors are less likely to greenlight. Aside from "Twilight," Summit's bread and butter has continues to be broad-based fare at moderate prices with recognizable stars such as "Red," "Source Code" and a pair of thrillers now in post-production: "Man on a Ledge" with Sam Worthington and "Cold Light of Day" with Henry Cavill, Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis. Upcoming pics include dance pic "Step Up 4" and vampire romancer "Warm Bodies."
Besides the fourth "Twilight," "Source Code" and 'The Beaver," Summit's 2011 release slate included "The Darkest Hour", "50/50" and Chris Weitz' drama about Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles, "A Better Life."
A "Red" sequel has been dated for next year but Summit hasn't locked down a director. Summit's also been attempting to launch a "Highlander" reboot. ."
Summit also scored a bit of a stunner two years ago with Oscar-winner "The Hurt Locker" -- the lowest grosser of any Oscar Best Picture winner.
Unlike Summit, Lionsgate also has a sizable TV production-distribution operation that is home to series including AMC's "Mad Men," Showtime's "Weeds" and "Nurse Jackie," "Boss" on Starz and the upcoming Charlie Sheen sitcom "Anger Management" on FX. Its Debmar-Mercury syndication operation includes "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" and "The Wendy Williams Show."
Lionsgate has grown through acquisitions during the past dozen years under Feltheimer and Burns. The duo have orchestrated the acquisitions of film and video libraries including Trimark in 2000, Artisan in 2003, Redbus in 2005, Debmar-Mercury in 2006, Mandate in 2007 and TV Guide Network in 2009, as well as a stake in distrib Roadside Attractions in 2007.
Despite the battle with Icahn, Lionsgate remained an active bidder for MGM in 2009 and 2010 before the Lion went through its pre-packaged bankruptcy in late 2010 in a deal that left Spyglass toppers Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber in charge.
Lionsgate is nearly $600 million in debt and has about 13,000 titles in its film and TV library.
JP Morgan, Barclays Capital, and Jefferies served as joint lead arrangers and joint bookrunners on financing the acquisition for Lionsgate. JP Morgan, Barclays Capital, and Jefferies also served as financial advisors to the Company. Barclays Capital provided a fairness opinion to Lionsgate. Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz served as outside legal counsel for Lionsgate. Liner Grode Stein LLP and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP served as outside legal counsel for Summit

Fine by me as long as I get to see some good vampire loving...and Bella kicking Jacobs ass...and Bella kicking Volturi ass...and then some more vampire loving...:)
well i`m kinda OK with the news in case this change doesn`t influence the release and promo of BD2 in a bad way...
That's alot of legal and financial stuff to try to understand. But my question is--if Liongate is $660million in debt how are they able to buy Summit?
Any chance they could move up the release date of BD2? Wonder if this can change the money the actors get from sales? Any thoughts S...just curious.
Huh. Interesting. No doubt a smart move on Lionsgate's part... BD 2 is money in the bank, who wouldn't want to be in on that, and combining their resources will probably open up lots of opportunities for making and distributing an increased number of movies.
Thanks, S, for always keeping us in the know :)
It doesn't matter with me as long as we're going to see BD2.
Let's petition Lions Gate for more goodies on future DVD releases. They should want to be in our good graces. Tanya, a young adult. (well if Edward can be, so can I!)
Congrats to them I guess, just don't mess with BD2......unless you'd like to release it earlier that is.
@Disliker I dont think so, both are done deals. BD2 release date is because of anticipated sfx work...
i just hope this doesn't affect breaking dawn promotion. i just want to see rob and kristen again for the world promotion that we haven't seen the past two years (of course they had legitimate excuses but this is probably the last time in a long time we'll see them together in public like that). i also don't want lionsgate to affect what is or isn't going to be part of the breaking dawn movie footage.
Wow. As much as I'm a twifan... Honestly, Twilight is done. There are NO more twi books aside from the bree tanner and the midnight sun that S. Meyer has allowed us to see.
It's time for everyone involved to move on to bigger and better things. Besides, NONE of them can age now, (Minus Jacob/Nessie).
Besides, what happens when SWATH does really well and they want another 1-2 flims? How the heck is Kristen suppose to do Bella and SWATH, and whatever project she has next? She's worked so hard thus far, I want her talent and her star to shine even brighter.
(Sorry S, had to rant a little.)

Breaking Dawn 2 and Hunger Games all in one year for one studio. This company's bank account will be quite impresssive
I cant wait for either one of these movies
Hmmm, that's interesting,so they want to have a continuation after BD2?Am I reading this right?
Additional Twilight movies? Might work if SM & cast were involved, if not...not so sure. It would be interesting to see what direction they'd try to take the saga in nonetheless.
Thanks for the updates S!
hmm well if HG and BD are going to be in one company this year then im hoping to see a fair competition~ the company has to sell both movies no? rather than going against each other... i like both books and ill watch both films so im happy it's not going to be bloody!
As much as I would loooooooooooooove more, I don't know if it would be good. They are going to end on a bang! I would hate for another one to come out and just bomb because the aging, the time, harsh critics. All good things must come to an end. Unless, they could just release it to true fans, who aren't critical, and won't mind the aging! :)
Am I the only one who feels like Lionsgate is going to exploit the living suit out of this series that is very dear to me? The story is done after BDPt2.....I dont see Harry Potter being taken to tv. This just smacks of a money grab. Well I can at least take solace that none of our beloved actors will be involved...well at least our own two beloved. I think these two are very eager to move on with the rest of their lives. Bad move Lionsgate, IMO.
I hope this does not have affect on anything related to the Saga. I hope everything stays the same with the release date of BD part 2 and everything. And i don't know about continuing with the twilight saga.... what could they possibly do next? i think it's better to end it after BD 2. It's better to end it while it's still very popular than when the ratings start to fall which could happen if they continue. As much as i love the twilight saga i think it's better this way cause i wouldn't wanna see it turning into something else...
@Lisa- ITA. You are funny:D
@anon- yeah, with hunger games and BD2 I am sure they may bounce back.
@J- Completely agree. I love twilight, too. I just don't know how much longer anyone can stay looking the age they are supposed to. I recall Rob saying something about that too something along the lines of:I don't know how much longer I can play a 17 year old vampire. xD
-Y
My brain is reeling from the idea that these idiots want to make another Twilight movie let alone do something on tv that will just ruin the whole thing. I hope that Stephenie has this locked down and under control and that she says no to any of it. She waited a long time to get the right actors and get the right moive company that would bring these books to the big screen with style. I don't want some new movie company cheapening any of this. I'm so not for this at all. And Rob and Kristen are getting older and I doubt they would want to do this again and without them well...I don't want to see it.
Thank heavens BD2 is "in the can" so to speak no telling what they might do with it if it wasn't.
And darn no more Sukmit jokes.
OK, here's the deal Lion's Gate, fans would love a photo shoot with just Kristen & Rob. Make it happen, please!
As much as I like Twilight, and I would have never spent my hard earned money on movie tickets, if it weren't for Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson. I hope they are done with Bella & Edward. There are bigger and better things for them.
I don't think so. Twilight was good to end as it did. Anything more would ruin it. Much rather see my favorite couple in something different.
@Becky B. I agree with you. As much as I love the movies and watching Kristen and Rob in them, I think it's enough. Everyone has to move on to something else.
@Renae Yeah guess we won't be hearing about Scummit anymore.
Twilight as a TV series?????? I don't think so. Unless they could get Rob to do Midnight Sun, I'm not interested.
Love Twilight but love Rob more - without him and Kristen - I doubt anyone would really get into it.
Sorry but as much as i love twilight and was upset after i finished reading breaking dawn wishing it didn't have to end and then falling in love with Rob and Kristen, i honestly think this would just be a bad move. What more is there to tell? Bella and Edwards story is over, Stephanie has said herself that the ending of breaking dawn was the completion of their story and lets not forget she hasn't wrong anymore and i wouldn't want to watch anything twilight related that wasn't her work. Also i really don't think Rob and Kristen and some of the others would honestly carry on especially as they are getting too old to play these characters. I just feel as well that this them using twilight, they're just thinking of the money. I would of moved more of twilight but truthfully if Bella and Edward aren't the main story i really aren't interested, that's what this whole saga has always been bout to me.
i have heard tne saga might be continued as a tv series, but , with different actors . i think this would be a very bad idea since part of the appeal of the saga ,besides the books themselves was the chemistry between robsten.
Ohhhh...I dunno. I think a lot of Twilight fans would love to see a continuation of Jacob and Renesemee. I think it could work...if Ms. Meyer writes another book. I'm pretty sure a book would have to come first.
I think they buy summit so they will have the brains that bring twilight saga to the top.
they surely can do it with the HG too.
i really dont think that they will do a sequel to twilight , maybe in the future with jacob and renesmee? but in my opinion this will not be a big one.
for the BD2 release I think they will keep it as planned...it's working till now why they would advance the release? I would love to see it right now but it's all part of the game. I think.
@Patty 8:41, no, you aren't the only one what has that feeling.
I do not know those business things but if Twilight will bring Summit $700 million, why they are selling the company for $412.5 million? Am I reading the news correctly? @.@
Mon
I think if they make it a tv series they will just change the whole story from the books which no one want.
@amamda- i agree, although the majority of us started off in love with the books and Bella and Edwards story, the appeal increased 10 fold when we all show the chemistry between Rob and Kristen, i honestly didn't think i could love E&B more but Robsten just pushed that love further, other actors just would not be right
I agree with many of you. Its perfect how it is now. BD is just end. Making tv series would ruin it. I dont like the idea of ruin the whole saga just for making more money. And Im pretty sure Stephenie, Kristen and Rob would feel the same way.
I agree with everyone else, I hope it doesn't affect the BD2 promo or distribution.
All this legal mumbo jumbo is confusing for me.. lol
Does this mean Twilight will still have the summit logo at the beginning of the films and etc.. ? or will it all be Lionsgate from now?
Kind of gutted if it will be, I like that it's summit.
I had to laugh when I read the statements of the Lionsgate exec that said he hoped Twilight wasn't over....sheesh, Hollywood never knows when to let a good thing come to its natural conclusion. I agree with all who say hopefully nothing will come of it, because Rob and Kristen could never be duplicated or replaced in further movies or a TV show, and they are the reason for the whole phenomenon. (Though the thought of a quick update of Jacob and Renesmee is intriguing.)
All righty then, moving on!
Mmmm, I dont know....., the story is complete and some things are good as they are.
....making money?
***=^.^=***
ok, new management, can we change the rating now pleasee?lol
ahh a TV series as well, Kofi does not think its a good idea, anyhoos, milking the cow peeps.
As long as it doesn't affect anything about twilight and its promotion by the time. Missing the robsten thanks S! as always patience is what we need.
No way!
@lala/c.."milking the cow"..lol!..most definite!..but as long as it does not affect Twilight's BD promotions!..ITA with @Sharilee.."Rob and Kristen could never be duplicated or replaced"..Twilight was a Phenomenom because of ROB and Kristen!!..now if the new studio owner wants to further milk the cow out of the twilight franchise .with the character I can't stand most ,the mutt ...well..I'm not going to be on board!..BD part2 will be the last time I'll support our beloved Saga..and of course whatever new projects of "Rob and Kristen"!!!!
Isn´t Lionsgate known for its dark and scary films profiles?, I wouldn´t mind a continuation of vamp Bella kicking serious ass!
I´m talking rated R, with lots of blood and sex! yikes!
This is all about money. In the beginning, not much money was put into the original movie or actors pay because they (studio) didn't know if the film would do well at box office. Now everyone are multimillionaires--from Stephenie Meyer to screenwriter MR (who could of done a better job IMO). The studio is just being greedy. It is sad for me that the ending of the series is tarnished (so to speak) by not wanting to let it end. Liked what Patty,Iva,Renae said totally agree. Now done ranting. thank you
for definite this is about money !! Just imagine those execs who are rubbing their hands together thinking they are going to flog this horse to death No integrity required !But hang on we all know that as long as BD2 is faithful to the book and it all ends up where it should this thing is sooo over , Robsten have a long way ahead of them They started off in a perfect place with twilight and the true fans will follow them to the ends of the earth if necessary But a TV series that would be sacrilege ! sorry for the rant !
Am I dreaming or do I remember Rob saying he would be on board if they did something more with Twilight? I could swear I heard him say that during promos of BD1.
Yeah, don't know what to think about this. It's hard to imagine them being willing to do more, or it being artistically viable. ITA @Sharilee, and others, only Rob and Kristen can play Edward and Bella now for me.
No way, I can't see Rob and kris ever accepting to do one more Twilight movie. They are moving on and the Twilight story is now over.
@Intruth I think he's being polite dear, he also said even if that's the case he wont be able to pull off 17 anymore :D
In my opinion, Now that lionsgate owns Summit they can do whatever the hell they want.. However, if they choose to continue the series on tv they will only spend money not earn it.. and as corporate big wigs, they probably think they can get a spin off of the rosalie and emmett story or nessie and jacob all grown up, however the actors from the film wont participate and the show will probably tank :/
On a side note! I think if they made a tv show that aired once a week 30 min long that only showed behind the scenes footage from the movies or cast interviews and never before seen stuff.. and even cast stories that show would make some serious bucks!
I'm a Twihard fan ... but don't like the idea of a sequel unless it's the original cast. But truly, I'd rather see Kristen and Rob doing a romantic comedy if together, and furthering their careers with other interesting roles to play. If a sequel was in the works, I think they'd best put it out there in book form and see how it is accepted by readers - not just who buys the book - but who loves it! Bottom line though -I'd see anything with Rob in it! ANYTHING!
Oh, thanks, S. I'm glad he's only being polite. He's right :)
I say let it go, with the fans having good memory of the first one and the last two. We have the books to read over and over as we please, DVDs casts interviews, magazines Companion to each movie and future films with the cast.
I say... let it end with dignity and how SM ends the Saga.
@Anonymous 3:50pm...I totally agree and I could not have said it better!!
@Kaylin: I'd love to see the cast get together and talk for a few hours. I'd pay to watch that. Maybe let Kristen do some cooking and follow the rest of the cast doing some of their favorite things. Who wants to bet that Nikki is trying to get a reality show...LOL.
Now...lets talk about them filming Midnight Sun now thats an intereseting thought that is if Stephenie will get her butt in gear and write the rest of it or publish it. However, the other night at the People's Choice Awards, I really saw how much older Rob is now and I don't know if he could pull off playing Edward much longer and Kristen is much older now as well so...I doubt that could be done.
I think that we can all agree that one of the reasons these movies were great, no matter how crappy the effects were or how trite the script was, was because of Rob and Kristen. Their chemistry is just mind-blowing. To have new people portray them and put this on tv would be a horrible idea and I can't see Stephenie letting this happen no matter what she fought to long to get the right combination of everything for all of us.
NOW I have a great idea lets peitition Lion's Gate to release that audtion tape of Rob and Kristen's or some of the R rated bits from Breaking Dawn part 1. There is their money maker right there!
Sorry to be a downer but unless R & K are involved, I really have not interest. I have no interest in any of the other characters. I wish them great success but if R & K are done, then so am I.
If they focus on making good movies ... not money ... I think they will be more successful. Easier said than done!
Though With sincere thanks and respect to SM for Twilight, I was not able to really get into the novela with Bree Tanner, or her other book, The Host. Twilight is a masterpiece that is finished. If another movie be made, please see if the book is well loved first.
Pure Hollywood - milk the big successful project until people are sick of it! A continuing Jacob or Renesmee story line would likely be the only thing that could work - and Taylor (as much as I like him) will probably need a job, right?
Would love to see R&K together in an gritty indie drama OR off-beat romantic comedy OR classic remake (anyone old enough to remember "Ryan's Daughter"? - epic movie & one of the best/classiest love/sex scenes on film between the heroine and her ENGLISH LOVER - hint, hint)...but just anything with R&K - I'll watch it!
This is just greed milking art for profit. Anything that comes out after this merger will be garbage. Plus I've read that LG is just eating their competition in what is the uglier side of capitalism. This story had allot of uniqueness to start with. A regular housewife having a dream and writing it down. It became a phenomena that was further boosted by two actors whose lives were changed in the process. Anything that happens now is just milking for profit. R/K won't be anywhere near this.
@dano Great to see you here again :)And I totally agree with you, yeah, the usual. lol
@dano Great to see you here again :)And I totally agree with you, yeah, the usual. lol
Completely agree with Dano.
I don't think they quite get the fact that Twilight's success is NOT based on "the young adult market." But, instead it's quite the adult market that is responsible for it's success. I went to the midnight showing where there were 13 Breaking Dawns showing and the place was jam packed with adults. I saw no young adults there.
I dunno why...but, it bugs me when I read where people think it's the "young adults" that made it what it is...just because when S. Meyers wrote the books initially for the young adults...but, that soon changed.
