Rotten Tomatoes Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson drew a solid crowd for their romantic drama Water for Elephants which premiered in third place with an estimated $17.5M. Based on the best-selling novel, the PG-13 film averaged $6,212 from 2,817 locations and played heavily to female audiences, lovers of the book, and Twilight fans that follow Pattinson religiously. Critics had mixed feelings but the built-in audiences came out anyway giving Fox the best opening for an adult drama this year so far. Mature-skewing thrillers and comedies have done exceptionally well this year, but regular dramas have seen more modest numbers on the first weekend. An A- CinemaScore suggests a good run ahead as counter-programming to a steady diet of testosterone flicks about to attack multiplexes.

All three times that I have seen the movie there has been a lot of men with their wives and girlfriends and teenage boys as well as girls. This little sleeper is beginning to wake people up. I am so happy for Rob.
it looks like in the USA there are many people who go see the movie while in Canada, there are not so many ... it's weird
and nobody claps !!!! :(
it's quite the opposite as twilight lol
euh Canada Montreal... its different !
YAY Rob & Reese! can't wait to go see it again!
Well everybody, ole' Mel just got home and finally got to see WFE! It was so wonderful and I didn't want it to end. Rob was so believable as Jacob and so very beautiful! My bestie, who has refused to watch Twilight and could have cared less about Rob is now madly in love with him. She wants to read the books and see all the Twilight movies. I told her he is even gorgeous with yellow eyes! I will definitely go back to see this amazing movie. Oh, and Reese, Christoph and Tai were great as well!
So proud of how well WFE is doing!
@MelfromTexas: Glad you made it through the weekend and finally got to see it! Worth the wait, right?
I'm trying to figure out when I can go see it again. Probably not this week, sigh :(
@Sharilee, yes definitely worth the wait! I'll dream about it tonight! I don't think I'll be able to see it again this week either, but I WILL SEE IT AGAIN!
i wasn't nervous about wfe becaus it is a beautiful story and have a great cast.but i am afraid for bel ami and cosmopolis.they are not bestsellers and don't have that good cast as wfe.so i hope these movies are made good.and i really hope cronenberg will make a good movie as book is superboring.
So happy WFE is doing amazingly well!
I can't wait for Bel Ami and Cosmopolis!
I think both of those have great casts as well...They are not as commercial as WFE but they are the type of roles that Rob needs to do in order to be taken seriously as an actor.
Bel Ami has Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci, and Kristin Scott Thomas (Amazing Actress!)
Cosmopolis is directed by Cronenberg and stars Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, and Samantha Morton. That is a very talented cast and director. Most actors would kill to work with Cronenberg and this is a huge opportunity for Rob. I can't wait to see his career unfold!
@anoy 2:25 scripts needs to be good.i hope rob isn't working in cosmo just because of cronenberg.if script is not good then even god can't save a film.i know we all love rob but a boring script never works.i hope everything goes well.
