TheHollywoodReporter The surprise is Water for Elephants -- starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz -- which is overperforming in early business at the domestic box office.
(...)Heading into the weekend, Fox 2000's Water for Elephants was projected to post an opening weekend gross of between $13 million to $15 million.
Water, based on the bestselling book by Sara Gruen, has been gaining momentum in recent days, particularly among younger females, and has every chance now of doing more business. The film's strongest demo, according to tracking, is older women. via RPLife
Deadline Water for Elephants is #3 on Friday with $7M
FRIDAY 6:30 PM: (No Easter Weekend estimates yet.) Twentieth Century Fox's Rio may be about a bird, but very early numbers show "it's holding like a rock," a studio exec just emailed me. Lionsgate's latest in Tyler Perry's franchise, Madea's Big Happy Family, looks soft. This is, after all, Perry's sixth cross-dressing film; the last one opened to $41M and the one before was $30M. But overperforming is Fox's intriguing for adults and Robert Pattinson's Twi-hards Water For Elephants based on Sara Gruen's best-selling book and written by Richard LaGravenese and directed by Francis Lawrence. "Terrific start for Elephants as we could hit higher teens," a Fox exec tells me. So it's not a bad Good Friday in more ways than one!
Refined numbers and full analysis coming later. Here are Top 5:
1. Rio 3D (Blue Sky Studio/Fox) Week 2
Friday $11M
2. Madea's Big Happy Family (Tyler Perry Studio/Lionsgate) NEW
Friday $10M
3. Water For Elephants (Fox 2000/Fox) NEW
Friday $7M
4. Hop (Illumination Entertainment/Universal) Week 4 [3,616 Theaters]
Friday $5.5M
5. African Cats (Disneynature/Walt Disney Studios) NEW [1,220 Theaters]
Friday $3M
6. Scream 4 (Miramax/Dimension/Weinstein Co) Week 2 [3,314 Theaters]
Friday $3M

here in Buffalo, NY it was hard to really tell exactly how many people will see the movie this weekend because tonight there was a Sabres/Flyers hockey playoff game so everyone was at home watching the game. But there were A LOT of adults there! Adults, as in, NON-TWILIGHT fans.
7 mil for just one day is more than good if the estimate for the whole wknd is 13, ahhhhhhh good
Yep, saw lots of kids & families at the theater today buying tickets for Hop or Rio. Even my nephew saw Rio today. I think it's to be expected with a long weekend off school for many kids. The Madea appeal I've never understood, but to each his own. Go WFE, Go!!
great news! GO ROB & ALL THE WFE GANG!:)//||\\
You can overperform, LOL?? Never heard that term used before regarding how a movie is doing.
We need to help it overperform so more and go see it multiple times this weekend, LOL.
god. that movie was amazing!
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE.
7 million for the opening day was good.
Rob can "overperform" for me any day!
@Janie You set 'em up & I'll spike
them into the gutter! LOL
yeah guys lets make it perform even more good at box office.i wanted to open it up atleast 12 million but whatever.
Great that it is overperforming! So proud of Rob! This is letting him prove his box office potential. This is very important for his future prospects in the industry...
Good to hear it's "overperforming". Let's hope more and more people will go and see it. Wish I could help, but here the movie won't be released until May 6th. Gah, I wanna see it so bad! I have planned multiple viewings... several friends wanna come with me and watch it and instead of going once all together I'm going several times. They think I'm nuts. *lol* I have even convinced my business partner to go and see it with me (screwing with the demos, he's 45 and male, lmao). Whatever it takes for our babies! =)
aimzers- There were a lot of adults for Twilight. So ? Twilight makes at least 70 million in one day ? So let's not compare.
That movie was MAGICAL!! i fell in love! i cried at the end. my mom doesn't like rob in twilight (psyhco)but she fell in love with him here!
*victory***
and may i say that I just about melted in my seat when i saw him dance!
so cUUUuuuUUuuuuuUUUUUUuuuuUte!!!!!!
Anon 2:45 - I wasnt comparing. I dont know where you got that from. I was saying I was glad there was such a large non-rob/non-twilight audience there. It was refreshing.
Good #'s so far. Momentum should just pick up especially with everyone seeing it more than once. I'll bring my hanky since it looks like I'll be crying. Happy Easter weekend to all my friends!
Went to see the movie with 2 friends who had never seen any of the Twilight movies (we all have grandchildren) and we all absolutely LOVED the movie. We all want to see it again. We all thought Rob was fantastic!!- a true and talented actor! One friend and I had read the book and we both agreed that it followed the story beautifully. BTW I didn't see many "tweens" there, mostly young and older adults. Rob is NOT just a teen idol!
Get this I read an article that stated because Rob has such prefect chemistry with Kristen he didn't "mesh" well with Reese. Really?! *sigh with eye roll*
I thought the movie was pretty good!
This movie was so good. Love it!
Anon 3:19 - Exactly. There was def an older crowd. No squeels and girly screams. It was refreshing! (there were def sighs when he came on the screen in the beginning though lol)
