SWATH Update: Could Joel Edgerton be Kristen's 'Huntsman'?

Updated! Indiewire and Deadline.com  report that Hurt Locker actor, Jeremy Renner is already locked in as the new lead in the Jason Bourne-less 'Bourne Legacy' - so does that mean we have Joel for our 'Huntsman'? Let's wait for further details.

NYMag Insiders tell Vulture that Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy wants to cast Australian actor Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) as the new hero in the Matt Damon–less franchise — an agent named Martin who was part of a Treadstone-like program. But the studio has two issues with this plan: First, they worry that Edgerton, who will next appear in their remake of The Thing, doesn't yet have enough worldwide recognition to carry this franchise. And second, our spies tell us that the studio is strongly considering Edgerton for the role of the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman, now that Hugh Jackman passed on it last week. (Edgerton's lack of global fame wouldn’t be as much of an issue here, as Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron would be the names selling the film.) But a decision needs to be made, as both films have to happen soon.

We’re told that the studio has made significant commitments for Snow White, and Stewart (who’s playing Snow) has already slashed her fee to make the film happen; this is clearly a top priority for the studio, and with most of the pieces in place they want to get it going quickly. And Universal is also facing pressure from the Robert Ludlum estate to get another Bourne film going. Currently the plan is to start shooting by July.Click to read the full article

The Playlist Tony Gilroy Wants Joel Edgerton For ‘The Bourne Legacy’
"With Hugh Jackman recently passing and the titular male lead in “Snow White and the Huntsman” still open, Universal is considering the actor for this franchise as well, which seems a bit bizarre. We think ‘Bourne’ would benefit much more from an “unknown” lead than this fairy tale franchise which will already have a helluva task in luring audiences as Tarsem‘s Julia Roberts-led film will hit theaters six months before this one.

So, we’ll have to see how Universal eventually plays the Joel Edgerton card. Vulture suggests that if he goes to ‘Huntsman,’ we can expect McAvoy or LaBeouf to land ‘Bourne,’ but if not, the field remains pretty wide open. Snow White and the Huntsman is slated for December 21, 2012.

Oooh, interesting....I've never heard of this guy, but he certainly looks like he could play tough and rugged...anybody ever seen anything he's been in?

Did Universal consider Keanu Reeves as the Huntsman? His name is big enough for the franchise. And he can def play a huntsman (killer) who also has a soft side (who lost his wife). I think him, Charlize and Kristen would make a wonderful team.

I think James McAvoy could be the Huntsman too. He can be tough and soft at the same time. There're so many options out there, may be Universal should take a vote from the fans ;)

idk who he is, but @least he's got that rugged look like you say sharilee so it's all good...I'm still w/ya S on Clive Owen though, yes mama!! who in the world's playing the prince I'd like to know?!! hmmm...tanxya for update S :)//||\\

@sharilee that's the problem, I've never seen him before! LOL!

To Universal, stop being stingy! If you want to pan from the Twi franchise, then heed our wishes!

I can already see what is happening & what would happen here especially to Joel Edgerton. There would a lot of negative feedback about this guy and possibly a petition. Exactly what happened to Rob when he got the role of Edward. Look where is Rob now in terms of his career. Joel looks ok. He is not that bad & he is an Aussie.

And by the way, how about Xavier Samuel or Tom Sturridge for Prince Charmant ?

No worries guys…I think his handsome and he has this tough look^^I think we shouldn’t see his physics or his face but we should see his talent!i know his not a huge A-list star but at least give him a chance if he signed SWATH film.we maybe surprise with his performances.annddd it is a great chance that universal introduce a new aussie actors in Hollywood and (maybe)become a big star like matthew machonaey?hugh jackman, chris hemswort and lots and lots of amazing aussie actor.
For me I have to see it first than judging his physics IF he plays the huntsman.at least I’m already happy that charlize and our bb girl already signed in!yay><
Now I WANT universal choose GARRETT HEDLUND as the PRINCE!his not busy right now and his very good looking plus his tall!lol

I know nothing about this Joel guy and it's nothing personal, but I wish they would get a really recognizable name to give it every advantage to compete with the other SW films.

@Anon6:37 I don't see TomStu as a good fit for the Prince Charmant role not to mention AWKWARD.(I'm sure everyone would be professional, but still)

And if this article is to be believed, let's give it up for our bbgirl, Kristen for "slashing her fee" to make the film happen. She is class act all the way!

he actually looks perfect for this

All I'm concern about is Kristen. Kristen always take her job seriously, her co-star should be someone equally professional as she is. I hope Universal will really take into consideration of person who plays the Huntsmen and make this movie a hit.

I think if no one heard of him before, he is not good. Kristen should do the same as Rob is doing, playing with Oscar winners actors, producers, directors and writers.

Misty, ITA about Kristen slashing her fee. She is a true actor! If this new kid on the block gets the part Kristen will make him look good!

>.< God, I'm supper worried now!!~ I hope they cast someone more famous, otherwise the pressure of box office will fall on Kristen wholly. (I don't want it happen but)If the film didn't do well on box office, they would blame it on Kristen and this would have bad influence on Kristen's career. C'mon, Universal, can't you set a bigger budget and hire a better Hustman? Please don't rush to pick someone nameless just for fitting the set schedule!!!~

Joel is a very talented actor and an Aussie too :) If he does do this movie he will be great. Also someone more 'famous' does not guarantee better Box Office js.

All the people that are saying no obviously are not familiare with Joel Edgerton's impressive background. Joel has AMAZING screen presense!!!
I have a feeling that you all will calm down the negativity if you guys see Joel in the critically acclaimed film 'The Animal Kingdom'
Dig deeper guys and DO NOT PREMATURELY BASH HIM HE IS A FANTASTIC ACTOR! GET TO KNOW HIS WORK BEFORE DISSING

Anon 930 your not famiiar with any of her work are you. She's work with plenty of oscar winners not that it is important to do so. Don't worry about her, she knows what she is doing and has for the past 10 years.

I'm glad to hear from some Aussies who know his work--he's just not well known here in the US, but that doesn't mean he's not a good actor, and this may be a vehicle to get some name recognition here. Hope we hear some definitive news soon. We still don't know who's playing the Prince, though, wonder who they're looking at for that role?
