Film.Com Talks WFE. Can Reese and Christoph Help Rob Transcend Twilight?

Film.com Fangs or suspenders ... which shows off Robert Pattinson's sexy side more?

That's the question pre- and post-tween Twi-hards still swooning over Rpattz's Edward Cullen may be pondering when they glimpse set snapshots from his upcoming Great Depression-era epic Water for Elephants. Those who appreciate Pattinson for his more serious, less supernatural roles in Remember Me and Little Ashes are probably asking themselves the same question.

Good Read - Don't miss this!

Whether or not you respect Pattinson's cinema presence doesn't really matter, though; there are plenty more reasons to get butterflies in your belly in anticipation of the April 2011 adaptation of Water for Elephants. Based on Sara Gruen's best-selling historical novel, it's a tale imbued with the sort of enchanted nostalgia that makes one feel like they've stepped inside a faded, sepia-tinged photograph or yellowed newspaper clipping scene and traveled back in time to tiptoe through the lives of the strangers in the pictures. Or as if they've perhaps snuck into the memories of a 93-year-old former circus veterinarian -- like the hero of Gruen's book, Jacob Jankowski.

Jacob narrates the beginning of his memoir from a nursing home as he surveys the installment of a traveling circus from his bedroom window. It stirs up memories of his youth as a 23-year-old carrying water for elephants and otherwise caring for a menagerie of circus animals during the 1930s. If that's not enough of a plot to entice you into Jankowski's circus, add to it the love triangle he forms with his married amour, the dazzling equestrian star Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), and her charismatic but brutal husband August (Christop Waltz replacing Sean Penn). (Rumor has it, in the movie August may end up being an amalgam of two of the novel's characters: August and tyrant circus owner Uncle Al.) Pile onto that paralyzed drunk pal Camel, who hides out in Jacob's train car; his ally Walter the dwarf; Rosie the marvelous and mistreated elephant; and the scandalous Coochie Girls. Set it all in the hard-knocks landscape of the Great Depression and you have the makings of a spectacularly thrilling, poignant, and romantic adventure. And not airbrushed rom-com romance, but rather love with gritty, witty, engrossing, true-to-life twists and turns that resonate like they've been lifted from the pages of your intrepid grandpa's diary.

Need more reason to add Water for Elephants to your spring movie schedule? Two words: Christoph Waltz. When the talent behind the nutty Oscar-winning Nazi from Inglourious Basterds slips on the shoes of a schizophrenic ringmaster, odds are good he'll give a show-stopping performance -- the kind that could earn him Academy Award number two. It will also be interesting to see if Pattinson holds his own with Witherspoon and if the two can make sparks fly. Water for Elephants is directed by I Am Legend's Francis Lawrence with P.S. I Love You screenwriter Richard Lagravenese penning the adapted script. So far, Water for Elephants seems like a cinema circus worth buying a ticket to see.

When I read the book,I immediately saw Rob,Reese and Christoph in the main roles of the story. It's easy to visualize characters and imagine how they will look, once we know who plays which parts. I think the film adaptation will be fantastic and perhaps this will shut the haters up,that Rob is just that "hot vampire guy from Twilight". There's so much more to his acting abilities than one character. Both he and Kristen have proved that.

I really hope Water of Elephants shows movie critics that Rob is more than just Edward. That he can act in any role. For me, Rob doesn't even have to get an oscar for this movie, it would make me happy enough if the movie critics that put down Rob in Remember Me last year, saw this movie and admited he's a great actor. I really want people to see that Rob can act.

..and who perfected the character Edward if not Robert Pattinson? If he is not acting in Twilight, what is he doing there? These critics have no originality! No balls to break out from old protocol! Sorry S..

WFF? Wow! I just can't wait to see this movie! As I've been saying, its the titanic of the circus world! The colors, the scenes and the actors just explode before your eyes! Fox has done a great job!!

'Jacob narrates the beginning of his memoir from a nursing home as he surveys the installment of a traveling circus from his bedroom window. It stirs up memories of his youth as a 23-year-old carrying water for elephants ...'

No! Jacob did not carry water for elephants. That is what Mr. McGuinty said he did and old Jacob got in trouble at the nursing home for calling him on it on page 10.

Rob will blow everyone away with his performance in this movie. Then people can step back and see that Rob is not Edward. Personally, I think he proved that with Remember Me, but unfortunatly many people did not see it. I think WFE and Bel Ami will turn the tide and he will be seen as a serious and very talented actor.

Rob has a huge following of older fans who will support this movie even if the teenyboppers have no interest in seeing it. Also, Reese and Chris have their own following. I feel this movie will be a major motion picture that will do well and be the break-out role for Rob with an Oscar nod.

I love Water For Elephants. The book was really well written and I'm so excited to see Rob depict Jacob. He definitely has what it takes to star amongst Oscar winning actors. I'm hoping that Water For Elephants gives him that extra push.

@mujhiko I've actually read some are using the titanic comparison in a negative way. "Oh WFE is just Titanic set at the circus--been there done that". Which is funny because I didn't get that at all from the book, but I can see the similarities now that it's been mentioned. But who cares, very few things in Hollywood are completely original and this is a great story/book--with a happier ending. And I hope WFE pulls in Titanic size numbers and award nominations.

I'm with you Anon 8:35. The person who wrote this piece must not have read the book. Jacob was beside himself furious about McGuinty implying he'd carried water for elephants, insisting that it wasn't possible and flat out called the man a liar. I can't imagine they would imply that in the movie when it so very clearly not true and in complete opposition of the book. Other than that, though, the rest of the piece is great.

Apparently August is going to be far worse than he is in the book since they've apparently rolled Uncle Al into his part. I checked IMDb looking for the part and it's not there. That being the case, August will play very differently than the book. Seems to me the two characters in one would be pure evil, making things all the more difficult for Jacob. It's going to be intense. I just want to see it already!

why everybody(almost) tell that twilight it's the biggest mistake that rob and kristen make, i don't get it.
rob looks here older than in eclipse, but i think that he'll show all his talent in this movie

@anon 11:15 To think that some of these critics can't get the run of the movie base from the trailer. The difference was in Cameron's titanic was done by a submersible called Alvin, while in WFE was done by old Hal and his wheel chair. Who cares about their negative balls? The fact that this was Rob's movie with two oscar winners as co-stars, and Legend's Francis Lawrence and Fox on the helm, surely this movie can make a very wide path in the BO.

@anon 7:52 if they did not make twilight, do you think we have this kind of discussion now?
