Gossip Cop The paparazzi situation has long been out of control.
On Tuesday, the California Assembly took action. Legislators overwhelmingly approved a bill that will hit reckless photographers with harsh penalties including possible imprisonment.
According to the legislation, photographers who break traffic laws or interfere with the operation of a celebrity’s car can receive a maximum $5,000 fine and one year imprisonment. After making its way through the Assembly and Senate this summer, a modified version passed Tuesday’s reconfirmation vote 43-13.
Now the state’s governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger – himself a victim of paparazzo pests — must sign the act into law. “We feel this new law will improve public safety in general and hopefully prevent anyone else from getting hurt,” said Paparazzi Reform Initiative founder Sean Burke.
Celebrities including Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have supported the measure, and with good reason considering recent events.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart had to flee paparazzi who weaved through Los Angeles traffic, endangering the stars and other motorists.
Paparazzi badgered January Jones into a minor accident, provoked Alexander Skarsgard and took invasive shots of Tori Spelling’s toddler, among other offenses. In general, photographers indifferent to decency have far more entitled than the celebs they accuse of bad behavior.
Gossip Cop is thrilled to see California take steps toward curbing the paparazzi menace.
Tuesday is the 13th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in an accident blamed on swarming photographers. Hopefully, stronger legislation and harsher penalties against paparazzi will help to ensure that an often dangerous tabloid culture doesn’t claim more victims.

Good to hear. Hope it makes a difference.
Its about time! California has been dealing with these problems for years upon years now and all cops can legally do is basically NOTHING. Its crazy! I hope something changes fast... sometimes I worry about our Robsten :(
can someone say
"IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME ! "
geesh FINALLY !
this is definitely good news i still dont think the penalties are harsh enough but oh well it's a start.
Wonderful news! I bet Kris and Rob are loving this!

finally thank you Jesus now the police will be forced to help
I hope there are enough teeth in this bill to actually make it effective and enforceable!! Paparazzi stalkers have no right to endanger innocent lives of celebrities or bystanders, but they have been doing so since the Princess Diana days. It's time for it to stop!! I, for one, will not miss the pictures that come from this kind of pursuit. Who doesn't love to see sweet pics of our fave couple...I know I do...but I don't want lives endangered for it.
Finally they pass a bill that would safeguard the security of many celebrities. It's good hear that there is already a law that prohibits stupid papz in taking pictures beyond the limits of privacy. I totally abhor paparazzi. Let there be no other victims of paparazzi like what happened to Princess Diana before the state of California became aware of it. I hope this will become a law very soon to nail those stupid papz into this ass.
Robsten will truly benefit this law and hope finally will leave them into peace.

HALLEJUAH! they have finally listened to our prayers. Because If those pap would have done something to cause Rob and Kristen harm I will so k- urg! Idk I don't even wanna think about that. But this is good I'm happy they made that law now robsten will have peace
And if there is a pap bothering someone and they get caught and end up in jail I will so be laughing. Hey they had their warning :D
Finally some legal action, let´s hope this makes everyone a little safer.
Go Robsten!!
Just had to say something!!
Later everyone

Sadly, this wont keep people from snapping pictures of them. It will just keep papz from chasing them in cars but I guess this is a good step in the right direction!
About freaking time!!!
HELL YEAH IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!
YES!!!! It's about dang time! A little at a time.....
@aimzers yeah that is sad but true..
but like i said it's a start at least SOME kind of action is finally being taken..whats even worse is that it took THIS long for something to be done about it.
Well, I don't think it's like 'WOW big change', because papz can still go to celebs houses or show up in a airport and make a mess, stuff like that. But at least is something!
And ABOUT TIME!
yeah read that it had passed but not the details.at last.
happy to hear that at least some action are taken to protect lives and privacy i hope so.
ANAHITA.
Thank God!
Glad to hear somethings happening. But I hope this happens to other states too like in NY. And I wish they also pass a law against paps who invade the celeb's privacy like that pap who got on the plane with Rob and Kristen. Actually there are more issues about the paparazzi than just them chasing their target around. Like stalking and taking aerial shots of their houses...
Thank God ...simething is being achieved about car-tailing of celebrities. It's about time the politicians have acted on this bill. A little victory at a time is OK.. we can amend the same law to be better in the future.
I'd like to thank all Rob's & Kristens' fans who contributed to this cause emailing politicians in LA to act on this bill... even the Office of the Governor, AS...
It's a nice feeling, we've achieved something today.! Thanks to everybody who contributed to this cause. More power to all Robsten's fans !!!!
Mack thank you. You said everything I was thinking and them some. Well put.
Finally someone did the right thing. What paparazzi have been doing are invading peoples lives and people got hurt. I hope this law could restrain them from doing anything evil again.
Good job, California !

TOTALLY out of context, but it's a little bit approp.
The day will come when we live in a respectful, pap controlled world

What a good news. I hope the law will be enfored as soon as possible. Then Robsten can have more private and peaceful time together.
