CMJornal How would you define Eric Packer (main character in 'Cosmpopolis'): it he just a sort of a weirdo or is he a visionary?
He's just a weirdo(laughs). I think he is a person who is desperately looking for something but doesn't know what that is. Basically, no one is a visionary, the world repeats itself.

But wasn't Don DeLillo's a visionary when he write the book? Because the story is set 12 years ago, but is current and reflects the global economy today...
Yes, that's crazy. But at the same time, the collapse of financial markets... it seemed obvious that would happen.

Do you follow news about the economy, the reality of Europe?
In general but not specifically. It's weird. I know they're all terrified of what's happening.

The dialogues of 'Cosmopolis' explores this theme but in a poetic, theatrical way. Do you believe that there are people that speak like that?
It is a little too theatrical. But Eric is a guy who doesn't share his world. In his universe, everybody speaks his language, behaves like he wants. He is totally egocentric, maniac, wants to be God.

And how different is Robert from Eric?
(Laughs) He's really confident and thinks no one can change him. While I... I change in every new talk, with every new person. I want to please those who talk to me.

But are you a confident person...
Kind of. I'm more confident when everyone hates me.

But they all love you, especially because of the success of 'Twilight'. Did you accept this movie because you thought it would change your career and turn you into a "serious" actor or was it because you would film with someone like David Cronenberg?
I try to do all my jobs as if I'm a serious actor (laughs). And some people forget that I ever did in the past... But David's (Cronenberg) movies are all so unique and personal that I knew it was important to make this movie.

At the Cannes Film Festival, critics were divided: hated and loved the movie. Do you really care about reviews?
I am always surprised. I thought no one would notice the film (laughs). But I like to see such passionate reactions, in any sense whatsoever. And everyone cares about the critics. I care about what everyone says. I care about what girls (fans) outside will tell and maybe they won't even like it

Are you going to work with Cronenberg again?
Yes, in a movie about the movie industry. Really fun and bizarre. I still don't know when we're going to film because I have other projects...

Do you think 'Cosmopolis' could be an Oscar movie?
I don't know. I keep my expectations low.

But winning an Oscar is the biggest dream for an actor...
Completely. Actors are moved by the awards, it is as if they were kicked on the head.

Director David Cronenberg and actor Robert Pattinson were at the Centro Cultural de Belem in Lisbon, this Tuesday, at the press conference for the film 'Cosmopolis', produced by Paulo Branco, while dozens of fans were waiting outside the premiere, scheduled for this night.

The film, - which premiered in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival in France last week, but didn't win any prize - will have it's second public screening in Lisbon, for a premiere at the CCB at 8:30PM, with the appearance of Cronenberg and the movie's lead actor, Robert Pattinson. There is another premiere scheduled, at 10PM at Monumental Cinema, also with the presence of both.

During a meeting today with the press, the Canadian director and British actor, accompanied by producer Paulo Branco told us some details about the shooting of the film, an adaptation of the novel by Don DeLillo.

At the entrance of the CCB, where a red carpet is already set, about twenty Pattinson fans at 12PM, were already waiting for tonight's premiere. Among them were four Spanish girls from Valladolid, that are there since Monday night.

New Info from @veraleeon regarding the details of the 'Cosmopolis' screening in Portugal on May 29th.

The screening is going to happen on Grand Auditorium of the CCB, on the 29th May at 8PM and will count with the presence of (confirmed to date) David Cronenberg - director, Robert Pattinson - the main actor, Don DeLillo - author and Paul Giamatti - actor.

Tomorrow (May 10, starting at 3PM), they will start to sell the tickets for the screening.

Via RPLife Paulo Branco talked to Portugal's newspaper Correio da Manha about the 'Cosmopolis' Portuguese Premiere and said that the event will be on May 28 and there will also be a screening on May 29. Rob, Giamatti, Cronenberg and DeLillo will attend.

Guimarães – Capital Europeia da Cultura will have an unprecedented turnout on May 28, when the English actor Robert Pattinson, idol of millions of movie fans, will attend the premiere of 'Cosmopolis', directed by David Cronenberg and produced by Paulo Branco, days after learning if they won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Major flooding will certainly happen on May 29, in the two 'Cosmopolis' screenings in Lisbon. One will take place at Centro Cultural de Belém, while the other will be open to the public, and Pattinson (and other actors, including Paul Giamatti) will be with the fans. The 'team' also includes the filmmaker David Cronenberg and writer Don DeLillo, whose novel is the basis of the film.

"I hope the fans are more civilized here," said Paulo Baulo to the CM, acknowledging that Pattinson's stay in "Cannes is a concern," since his last time in the French city the reactions were described as Beatles-like.

In the film which opens in 30 theaters on May 31st, Pattinson plays a character very different from the vampire 'Edward Cullen', star of Twilight. This is the odyssey of a Manhattan mogul that runs through the city (although shooting has taken place in Toronto and not in New York) in his limousine.

'Cosmopolis' wants the Palme d'Or  -'Cosmopolis' is in a list of candidates for the Palme d'Or in the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, revealed yesterday. According to Paulo Branco, producer of the film where David Cronenberg has made a metaphor about the capitalism crisis, to find yourself in this list "will only provide visibility throughout the world" to the project. Besides the 11th film produced by Branco candidate for the top prize at Cannes, the festival which runs from May 16-27 features works by Walter Salles ("On the Road"), Leos Carax ("Holy Motors"), Michael Haneke ("Amour") and Wes Anderson, whose 'Moonrise Kingdom' opens an exhibition.

Interviewer: Paulo, good evening. This is the 11th movie that you produce and has been selected to the competition in Cannes - the most important film festival in Europe. From what we saw in the trailer and from the little we know, this is not an European movie. Is this your most important movie?
Paulo Branco: Well, as a producer I like to think all movies are important, but this one is special, of course. It's a movie where, for the first time, I worked the way they do on the other side of the Atlantic. It was filmed in Toronto with one of the best directors in the world, David Cronenberg, that was kind enough to listen and accept my proposal, and with great Hollywood actors. And it's the first time I work on a movie this big and with this budget.

Interviewer: We're talking about a major production?
PB: We're talking about a medium American production, about 15M Euros. A French-Canadian movie. We had as much support from France as from Canada. Although, it is a budget that indie producers are not used to, especially with the freedom I had to produce this movie: choosing the director, David Cronenberg, and the actors (along with Cronenberg). It was an unique experience. I am proud (for the movie) to be in Cannes now; to be aknowledged. Every movie in Cannes, in competition, they're not just “another movie”. It's always something special, someone who has been and follows the festival, can understand.

I: The cast and crew of this movie is impressive. Famous director, David Cronenberg. The main actors are, I should say, even more famous (Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson, from the Twilight Saga). I want to know if there's anything planned for the release of the movie in Portugal in May with them?
PB: Precisely. It was created some sort of empathy with Don de Lillo, David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson, that since the beginning, when I talked about the idea of doing a small promo tour in Europe to promote the movie, starting in Portugal, they immediately accepted. They'll be here right after Cannes for the Portuguese premiere of the movie. I think it's an unique event, for a movie premiere, in Portugal. And an example of professionalism and devotion from the people that worked in this film. For Pattinson, this project is essential. He watched the movie and personally told me that it was, maybe, the project that he was most proud of and wanted to support it wherever it was necessary. Don DeLillo, one of the biggest writers in the world, when saw the movie... (Interviewer interrupts Paulo Branco)

Produced by Paulo Branco, the film has been selected for official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, being the 11th film of the Portuguese producer to earn the distinction.

Expresso Expresso is a reliable Portuguese site. Paulo Branco, Cosmopolis producer, is from Portugal and was responsible for showing the first preview of the movie at the Lisbon and Estoril Festival last year.
