Walter Salles talks about Kristen and OTR
KStewartBR's Exclusive Interview with Walter Salles.
About the choice of Kristen for the role of Marylou: “She was one of the first people to join the project. A friend of mine had seen “Into the Wild” and told me about her. I remember she was so unknown at the time that I had to write her name on a piece of paper not to forget [laughs]. When I met her, it was a nice surprise to know that “On The Road” was her favorite book.”
About having Kristen in the cast: “It was something great to have Kristen in the cast. Several young people who are fans of her and had no contact with Jack Kerouac’s work came to know this other side of literature. And now many of them are fans of this kind of reading.”
About Kristen and Garrett being faithful to the project: “In this movie they received the minimum wage possible, so they were shooting because they really love the book itself. They all remained faithful to the project after becoming famous. Garrett called me every time throughout the period that the filming did not materialize to know if he could accept other movies’ projects, or we were about to start filming “On The Road”, which was his priority.”

AP 'On the Road' Article + Interview
APNews Kristen Stewart understands the lure of the open road. So do her “On The Road” co-stars, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.
The three young actors play the central love triangle in Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s Beat Generation novel, an experience that has helped them appreciate why the book is considered a classic.
The tale of wannabe writer (and Kerouac surrogate) Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the United States in search of freedom and the elusive “it” was published in 1957. But Stewart said the way it captures the heady feeling of young adulthood is timeless.
“You’re so filled with something that is hard to identify at this age,” said the “Twilight” star, who plays Dean’s teenage bride Marylou, a free spirit torn between the lure of adventure and desire for a more settled life.
“You’re just bursting, and (the characters) value that so much,” said Stewart, who is just 22 herself.
“They don’t ignore it. That celebration of youth and exploration is just something that you envy.
“I read it right at the point when I was about to get my (driver’s) license, and I thought, wow, I want to meet people who push me the way people push each other. I wanted to be more like them.”

J.A. Michel Bornais(of Le Trésor des Kirouac) on Kristen - "I had the pleasure to meet with Kristen Stewart for almost 40 minutes while she was at the boot camp in Montreal. We mainly discussed about the sad story of Jan Kerouac, Jack's abandoned daughter. Upon leaving, I said : Madame, if someone deserves a movie, it's Jan. Must say that I then had the pleasure to meet with a very attentive, intelligent and sensitive person. I wish her the best at Cannes with her role in On The Road." source via KStewAngel
