Indiewire lists 'Bel Ami' as one of the top 10 indie movies to watch on VOD this May
Robert Pattinson takes a break from his "Twilight" duties to woo a slew of women in "Bel Ami," which had its world premiere at this year's Berlin International Film Festival. The film retells Guy de Maupassant's tale of social climbing in 19th century Paris, with Pattinson starring as a young seducer who takes advantage of some influential Parisian ladies (Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas abd Christina Ricci). The film arrives on VOD via Magnolia Pictures before opening in select theaters.

Or watch @MTV

Check HERE for confirmed US cinema list for opening day, June 8th.

MTVThe clip opens in a boudoir with the mostly naked and slightly disheveled Clotilde de Marelle (Christina Ricci) lying in bed, post-tryst, posing a question to her equally scantily clad lover, Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson). Duroy is a self-made man of sorts, who uses his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute's embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties in 19th-century Paris, where politics and media jostle for influence and where sex is power and celebrity an obsession.

"What are you reading?" de Marelle asks Duroy.

"It's a letter from my father. Every week he puts on his best suit and goes to the priest and the priest writes a letter for him," Duroy reveals as he gets back into bed. "And every week it's the same thing: 'Your mother sends her blessings. [The] pigs have diarrhea, when are you getting married?' My father's a peasant, he's never left his village. And he's asking me for money."

"I'd like to see where you grew up," says de Marelle, who appears to be a young lady of the upper class.
"I'd like to see you there," Duroy says intimately before locking lips with de Marelle.
"Promise me something," she requests. "Don't bring your other women here."
"I don't have other women," he counters.

"All men have other women," de Marelle says, which Duroy refutes and the lady reacts incredulously.
"Honestly?" she says.
"Honestly and truly," he answers.

Despite the sweetness and sincerity captured in this particular scene, Pattinson has teased that his character gets himself involved with a variety of female paramours. More importantly, in addition to his being shirtless in a lot of scenes, there's also a lot of his bare bottom in the film.

"I think there's a lot of my crack in it," he laughed when describing the film to MTV news. "I think there's quite a bit of nudity."

"Bel Ami" opens in Los Angeles, New York and select cites on June 8. The film will be available on VOD on May 4.

orestier: Duroy
Forestier: M. Rousset. Do you remember Georges Duroy? Diary of a cavalry officer?
Rousset: And that was a succes. Write another and put him on the payroll, Forestier.
Forestier: Will do, sir.
You will earn five francs for the next five. Then two hundred a month. Plus ten cents per line, for all the items that you will published. Go talk to the cashier. What's wrong? Can’t believe your luck?

Rousset: Overthrow this government with a single word. I want that word on the first page of every newspaper. I want it all over the walls and shop windows. I want men, women and children to know that this government lives in a lie. Forestier unearthed something.
George: How did you say?
Rousset: What?
Georges: You called me Forestier.
Rousset: Ah, force of habit, but I didn’t want to offend you, it's easy to make this error.
Georges: I don’t understand.
Madeleine: You have more control of troop movements. The logistics.
Rousset: Right. La Roche, you can help.
La Roche: I know two officers who are, sympathetic to our cause.
Rousset: Well talk about it then. La Roche will tell you what to write.

Madeleine: I took him to Cannes to make him better. But I know that he will not make it. These are my favorite, thanks. (referring to the flowers).
Charles: you came to see me die.
George: No, I escaped from the city.
Charles: Because I will live.
Madeleine: Yes, yes.
Charles: I will live ... I live ... help me.

Clotilde: I am very happy for you.
Georges: How is Laurine?
Clotilde: She can’t forgive you, unfortunately. Monsieur Forestier calls you, you know? She's small, can’t understand.
Georges: And you?
Clotilde: You did a good marriage. Is what we all do. I miss you very much. To our love nest just miss you.
Georges: But how will you still have?
Clotilde: I’m an incurable optimist

Bel Ami Directors talk about Rob - Huffington Post. Philip Glenister mentions Rob

New short clip of DuRob smoking from the BBC Film 2012 Feature

DailyMail Philip Glenister Mentions Rob.
Philip Glenister has a funny interview with the Daily Mail in which he talks filming Bel Ami, and the fans that followed Rob around:
We were filming at a house in Hertfordshire adjoining a school. The pupils got wind of it and started chanting, “Robert, Robert”. We had to threaten them with cattle prods!’

HuffingtonPost Robert Pattinson has made a generation of girls swoon, and brought in millions of dollars for the producers of the Twilight phenomenon, where his portrayal of Edward Cullen means he needn't get out of bed again if he doesn’t feel like it.

So, it would be understandable if such adulation had gone to his pretty tousle-haired head, and made him a bit difficult to work with. How did the directors of his new film Bel Ami deal with such an idol on this, their very first film?

"He was delightful," insists Nick Ormerod, one half of the directing duo along with Declan Donnellan - established theatre directors with a body of stage, ballet and opera work more than three decades in the making, but novices when it came to film.

"He did insist on rehearsing for a whole month before we did our first shoot, which is apparently unheard of in Hollywood, but he was passionately attached to the project."

"He wasn't that famous when we offered him the part," remembers Donnellan. "He'd done Harry Potter, Twilight was just starting, and I remember seeing his face on the side of a bus.

Deadline New York – (March 12, 2012) – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today the June 8th U.S. theatrical release of BEL AMI, starring Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, and Colm Meaney. BEL AMI had its World Premiere as an Official Selection of last month’s 62nd Berlin International Film Festival.

In this sexy retelling of Guy de Maupassant’s classic tale of blackmail, manipulation, and social-climbing, set against 19th century Paris, Pattinson stars as the young and very ambitious George Duroy, who discovers that his unadulterated passion and seduction skills with influential Parisian ladies (Ricci, Thurman, and Thomas), above-all, is the fastest and most effective way to the upper echelons of the society he so desperately wants to control.

Directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, the film was written by Rachel Bennette, produced by Uberto Pasolini (The Full Monty), and Simon Fuller of XIX Entertainment (“American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance”) executive produced.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) will handle all other U.S. media.

“BEL AMI is a well-crafted, appealing film with a terrific ensemble cast,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “We think it’s a great fit for our Ultra VOD program.”  The deal was negotiated for Magnolia by SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley and Head of Business Affairs Chris Matson with SPWA’s EVP of Business Affairs Michael Helfand and VP Acquisitions and Distribution Tana Evans.

Variety Magnolia Pictures has acquired Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod's Robert Pattinson-starrer "Bel Ami" and will give the period pic a theatrical release in the U.S. on June 8. Deal was made with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which will handle all other U.S. media.

"'Bel Ami' is a well-crafted, appealing film with a terrific ensemble cast," said Magnolia prexy Eamonn Bowles. "We think it's a great fit for our Ultra VOD program."

Deal was negotiated for Magnolia by senior VP of acquisitions Dori Begley and head of business affairs Chris Matson, along with SPWA's exec VP of business affairs Michael Helfand and VP of acquisitions and distribution Tana Evans.

Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod talk about Rob and Bel Ami

Photobucket

DIYUK We met with Donnellan and Ormerod to talk about their rascal of a lead character, getting the cast on such a modest budget, and their working relationship.

Can I ask how you get such a cast on a relatively modest budget?
Ormerod: The more you hear about film, you realise that people [actors] aren’t well-paid and they will do a project they want to do. I’m glad to say they wanted to work with us, but they also loved the script – Rob really grabbed at it, and loved the character.

What was it about Rob that you liked?
Ormerod: I think he’s perfect for the role. He has those matinee idol good looks, the sort of gigilo looks that those women completely fall for, and yet he has a darkness, and interest, and a vulnerability sometimes too.
Donnellan: He’s very bright too, and he understood the character. Rob’s got an enormous amount of talent, but we’re all fascinated by this character who has no talent. It’s a modern story – the person who gets to the top with no talent. A journalist asked us the other day, “was this the first time the two of you have worked together?” You do start asking, how did they get the job? When I was young, it was really difficult to get jobs, and I think a lot of people get jobs because… I don’t know. There’s this fascination with how people get to the top of their jobs. They get there because they’re empty, because they have no imagination, so other people can pin fantasies on them.
Ormerod: In every organisation you see them – their one talent is to get to the top.

Were you under any pressure to tone down the sex scenes when Rob came on board, in terms of attracting a wider audience?
Ormerod: No, the film is about sex. It's not titillating sex.
Donnellan: It's about a guy who sells his body, basically. All these women are in comfortable marriages, and none of them want to get divorced. Their relationship with him is essentially sexual.

Christina Ricci talks to MSN France about Rob's fame. At 0:25 and 0:50

The Telegraph - Christina Ricci talks about Rob at 0:50

MirrorUK He is one of the most bankable, handsome film stars in the world, and a household name having starred most famously as hunky Edward Cullen in the box office-storming Twilight series, and as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter films. Yet Christina Ricci knew almost nothing about Robert Pattinson, and had seen none of his movies, when they met on the set of the new erotic drama Bel Ami.

However, they still hit it off like old friends and turned a sometimes difficult film shoot into a fun-filled frolic.

We would just goof off and laugh while we were working,” says Christina, 32.

He’s a sweet guy and super funny... and a really good kisser.”

It was therefore easy for her to understand why Rob’s girlfriend, Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, paid so many visits to the set.

“He’s so charming and smart,” Christina continues. “He’s so organised and in charge of his career. He was actually giving me advice,” adds Californian Ricci, who has been acting since she was nine years old.  Her favourite parts of filming, she says, were “the costumes, the makeup and Rob”
