The Music.com.au Kristen Stewart believes that most people’s notion of Snow White is the sweet, demure Disney version of the character (“unless they read a lot of fairy tales as a kid, which I didn’t), and so she admits that she didn’t really see the potential of a new Snow White story when she first heard about the film.
“I didn’t really see why anyone would want to join her cause,” she says. “Back when the Disney version was made, being a caretaker, being delicate and sweet and maternal, was kind of an ultimate goal. But to do the story today, I think she has to do a little more than sweep house. When I read it, I could totally recognise Snow White within this very dark context as someone really, really trying to retain light and not harden.
“Right now, a lot of female characters that are trying to be strong are promoted as ‘Yeah, female empowerment!’ but in this case I’m glad she remained a girl, someone trying to find her strength and her steadiness and her compassion and her trust in herself. You know, we rip her heart out and stomp on it, put it back in her chest and see if it still beats… and it does. So I thought it was really impressive, the darkness and the light of this world.”
It was revealed this week that Stewart topped the Forbes magazine list of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, her paydays for the last two Twilight Saga movies earning her more than $12 million (and her cut of her profits ramping it up even more). But her tastes seem to be run more towards the independent end of things, with the actress taking on roles in critically-acclaimed films like Adventureland, Into the Wild and The Runaways.
So she was happily surprised when Snow White And The Huntsman offered her the opportunity to delve a little deeper into the creative process than she imagined it would.

That the actress is not your average glamour princess occurs to me, the BRAVO reporter, the minute I meet Kris for our interview at the luxury hotel Ritz Carlton in Berlin (200€ per night). Instead of a sexy dress and high heels she is wearing leather boots, burgundy colored jeans, a simple top, and a black jeans jacket. The beauty hardly put on any make-up and her hair is not styled but casual. I quickly realize: This girl is comfortable with herself and has a mind on her own.
She wears, says, and does what she wants which is why Hollywood’s glamour world has given her the reputation of being an outsider. Sometimes she is even described as “impolite” and “being in a bad mood”. Boyfriend and Twilight colleague Robert Pattinson defends the love of his life and says: “People have decided how they are going to perceive her. No matter how many times she smiles, they’ll put in the one picture where she’s not smiling.” True! In real life the tiny actress is very nice and constantly grinning. The 5’5’’ superstar is obviously proud of her role in the 140 million dollar expensive adaptation of the famous fairy tale. Twilight’s sensitive Bella turned into a tough heroine – and even shows some courage in real life…
BRAVO: What did you enjoy the most while shooting the movie?
Kristen: The sword fights (laughs)! And I have to say that being on set already felt like being in a fairy tale. The world that Rupert created is incredibly beautiful.
BRAVO: Did you trust him right away? It was Rupert’s first movie after all! Before, he only did TV commercials…
Kristen: The moment I met him for the first time I knew he’s the right guy. I think it’s so important to give new talents some kind of “power”.

”It makes so much more sense to be at a real castle and not sitting at a Beverly Hills hotel,” she says.
The 22-year-old Twilight star has asked if we can sit outside, so she can get some fresh air in the middle of a long day of interviews. As we chat about her role as Snow White – the fairytale character known for her pale beauty and, according to the Disney version at least, winning ways – a bee buzzes past and Stewart jumps out of her seat in fright.
”So much for my ‘Snow White’ effect,” she says. ”Not even the bees like me.”
Hollywood has no such problem and has embraced the poised young star since her breakthrough as Jodie Foster’s daughter in the 2002 thriller Panic Room.
After a string of roles in films including Cold Creek Manor, Zathura, Fierce People and Into the Wild, Stewart catapulted to stardom in 2008 as Bella Swan, the teenager who falls in love with a vampire in the wildly successful film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels. The fifth and final Twilight film will be released this year.
As Snow White, Stewart is inhabiting another iconic literary role, but Snow White and the Huntsman takes a fresh look at the German fairytale told by the Brothers Grimm. In the film, Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) sends a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to bring Snow White back after she escapes the castle and hides in the enchanted forest. But he changes his mind after meeting her and instead tries to help her win back her kingdom.
”Times have changed and so have fairytales,” Stewart says. ”Snow White is essentially a matriarch and a caretaker in the original story but it was really important to me that she was an action star, too. Not a girl doing an imitation of a dude,” she adds firmly, ”but a strong woman who kicks arse.”
Stewart says her biggest challenge during filming had four legs. ‘‘I was nine when I got thrown from a horse and broke and dislocated my elbow, so that was a hurdle on this film for sure,” she says.
”Not until the last minute did I know if I could actually get on a horse again and that deeply terrified look you’ll see in my performance is not acting.”
Aussie actor Hemsworth – best known for his roles in Thor and The Avengers – is full of praise for his co-star. ”She had such a strong opinion of where she wanted to take the character and who the character was, so she set the tone, led the charge and made it easy to follow behind.”
The fiercely private actress – who has reportedly been dating Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson for three years but has never confirmed the relationship publicly – is surprisingly unaffected by living in the spotlight.
”A lot of people make movies to become famous and rich and it sounds totally trite but I do it because I love it,” she says. ”Right now, the most interesting thing about me is the fact that I’ve done Snow White and it’s coming out next week. ”Things get so muddled and unreasonable when you start becoming a commodity, so I’d just rather not do that.”

Premiere: The epilogue of Twilight comes out in November, you were in Cannes not long ago with On The Road, we'll find you again this month in Snow White and the Huntsman ... This is a big year for you. The most impressive of your young career?
The most exciting, certainly yes! And yes, probably the biggest since the release of the first Twilight. I am pleased to be showing these three very different films. There is a contrast between each of them that will perhaps allow spectators to see me in a new light. But there was absolutely nothing premeditated on my part. I did not say "Okay, let's try to release these three movies at the same time, just to show that I have a wide acting range." (Laughter). It's really a coincidence and not the result of a strategy or any career plan.
Premiere: It's hard not to notice with the Cannes selections of On The Road & Cosmopolis that it's a sign the Twilight chapter is definitely closed for Robert Pattinson and you...
Yes, Cannes is the Grail, the ultimate goal for every actor. This is not why we do this profession, but there is no reward more satisfying than a selection there. That said, it's hard for me to talk about the "end" of Twilight. First of all because the last film has not been released yet, and also because I've never had the feeling of being trapped in the saga. I've always tried to change a little, to try new things between each movies.

Kristen Stewart has finally broken free from the vampire genre and has moved on to an old time classic. "OM" met up with her in LA to talk about love, fashion and working with some of Hollywoods biggest names.
Kristen isn't the one who laughs unnecessary in her movies and it's not often we see her smile in photos.
When "OM" met up with the famous actress in LA she is however all smiles and cheerful. She is leaning back on her chair and constantly tries to pick off the label on the water bottle she's sipping from during our interview.
She is dressed in black sneakers, washed out black jeans and a black oversized v-neck t-shirt. A pair of sunglasses is hanging from the v-neck.
Snow White and the Huntsman is a new take on the original story and is about the dream of finding a prince. Have you met your Prince Charming?
KS: Haha, eh..what am I supposed to say to that?
I already know about your relationship with Robert Pattinson, it's no secret anymore.
Kristen Stewart: Haha, ok. I can reveal that I like men who makes me laugh, but who can protect me and take care of me. Security is important to me. It's not so practical but I really want to be with someone who likes me and that I can trust in all situations.

The heroin of the twilight saga comes back with a Badass Snow White, but she says she stays true to the classic character. “Snow white and the huntsman” makes its debut in Chile on June 21st.
Protected inside of a centric and luxury Aztec hotel, Kristen Stewart is not indifferent to the chorus of hundreds of fans that have been here throughout the morning and much of the afternoon making a vigil to wait for her to appear on a balcony and greet. And although she does it, the loyal fans do not leave the area waiting of a new appearance.

Here is a young lady that must lead a rebel army to take back her throne from her evil stepmother (Charlize theron) and divide her heart between the charming prince (Sam Clafin) and the man sent to kill her (Chris Hemsworth) who becomes her ally. Snow white and the huntsman it’s a super production of $170 million that debuts with success in United States.
Did you admire this character when you were a child?
“The truth is that I’ve been never a fan of fairy tales; the stories of princess were never my favorites. I mean, I understand why these stories have endured for so long but never did tune with me. That’s why I like this movie, because it was very different. As an actress, I want to challenge myself and discover things, and this Snow white keeps all its delicacy and sweetness, but must fight and become harden.”

This Snow White is really different from the one we all know. How would you describe her?
She is very lonely. Since she was a child, she has responsibilities and a link with nature. She is not a superhero, but her capacity to see the good in each person is almost supernatural. It is one of the reasons I wanted to be a part of the movie.
Does she look like Bella, the fiancée of the vampire in Twilight?
A little. Both of them see the light where nobody does. They stay on their ground until the others agree with them. Bella and Snow White are leaders. However, they become leaders due to men!
Fightings are very present in the movie. The shooting must have been very physical?
Yes, I had the impression to be in a boot camp! [Laughs]. But, being an actress, I have few opportunities to play such scenes. Riding a horse and fighting, in armor with a sword in my hand… Everything was really amazing!
Welcome to The Rileys, The Runaways, On the Road… You have been in many independent movies. Is it to make forget Twilight?
[She thinks for a long time]. I really liked this franchise. But the experience lasted for so long and it was really intense on an emotional level that it became exhausting. I needed to commit in other projects.
Have you always felt free in your choices?
Absolutely. I always have had follow my choices. I really need a connection with my character. I loved every each of them I played. I feel kind of responsible toward them.
