Complex.com How are you adjusting to all this media attention?
Rupert Sanders: I wouldn’t say I’ve become like Kristen Stewart, but I certainly have to talk a lot more than I am used to about my work. [Laughs.] But I am very proud of it and I am proud of making it and I am proud to work with so many great people. It's good to talk about it.

Obviously we see the uncharacteristic toughness of Snow White in the film, but how different did you want to make Snow White and what do you think Kristen Stewart brought to her?
RS: I think Kristen Stewart brought a lot to it. I think she is very brave and rebellious. She has a weight on her shoulder, she’s really in the spotlight, and she deals with everything on her own. I think she’s inspiring, and all of those qualities made her what I wanted in the role of Snow White.

  HP.com It’s not just a big movie for you, it’s a big movie for Kristen Stewart. In a, “I’m not just Bella Swan,” kind of way.
Rupert Sanders: To me, casting is all about finding a character within the actor off the screen as much as on the screen. I think Kristen is incredibly brave.

People forget that she was in movies like “Panic Room.
Well, my theory is a simple theory: She played such a good version Bella Swan, people think Kristen Stewart is Bella Swan. She’s not, you know? If you meet Kristen, she’s wildly kind of giggly and vivacious and rebellious and naughty — all things that Bella Swan isn’t.

Give us your take on Kristen’s character. Do you see her as a Christian hero?
There’s definitely a spiritual side, I’d say. It’s the Joseph Campbell The Hero With a Thousand Faces you know, she’s the archetypal mythical hero, so they are always given those characteristics. In hindsight, there’s a few things in there, in that she’s walking on water and these things are quite religious but I think ultimately she is a spiritual being, she is drawn by that and people are drawn to her because of that.

 “She’s very vital,” Rupert Sanders told Kate Spencer at the film’s press junket in the UK last week. “She’s very on the edge and very rebellious, which I like. She doesn’t play by anyone’s rules. She’s just got all those things that make a very modern and intoxicating Show White.”

Rupert said he didn’t want this film to be about “damsel in distress waiting for her prince,” but rather a “leader” who inspires her people to follow her into battle for the greater good. He found his heroine in Kristen. “When I first met her with the producers,” said Rupert, “we all saw something really raw and primal in this girl, and we really liked that.”

 

The  HeraldSunAU has an new article up on their site. Kristen’s quotes are from previous interviews (FilmInk) but Rupert Sander's quotes are new.

Stewart was always first choice for the lead, Sanders says. "Obviously everyone knew about Kristen. She was someone we wanted to meet," Sanders says, standing outside one of his 30 astounding sets.

"We started, as you do in these things, looking around. (The film's producer) Joe (Roth) had just made Alice in Wonderland, where he had found a new actress (Mia Wasikowska) and we felt there was something very innocent and pure about finding someone with no other roles that you associate them with. But when we went to meet Kristen it was a very simple, done deal. Yes, you are the one."

Coincidentally the unknown actor they turned down for the role, Lily Collins - the raven-haired daughter of Phil Collins - was cast as Snow White in the rival Mirror, Mirror.

Based on the trailer, his version of Snow White is a visual feast. Sixty per cent was shot in real locations, including a deserted Welsh beach and some woodland in London's Queen's Park. The sets, including the evil queen's milk bath and a snow-covered woodland, are breathtakingly real.

"There's quite a lot you're nervous about when you start a project of this scale," Sanders admits."I wanted to create a world where this all felt tangible and it didn't feel like fantasy but felt real."

He adds that his mantra throughout the project was to make a film "that means something" and is true to the original, seven-page story. "People think Snow White is Disney," Sanders says."Disney really made the Grimm's fairy tale very family orientated.But it is a very dark story about so many deeper issues that were never in the Disney version. It's like a biblical tale almost, with a lot of messages and hidden meanings. It's a story that is as resonant today as it was when it was first recorded."

Another sweet mention, this time from Nick Frost, who plays one of the dwarves in ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’. He talked to SciFiNow magazine about SWATH and working with Kristen.

He said, “Kristen Stewart works hard – she works 16 hours a day, six days a week, probably for 200 days a year. That’s not to be sniffed at.” He also explained a bit about the role of the dwarves: “The dwarves you see in the film, we’re the last of our kind…. We’re a sad bunch, we’re animals. Once we meet Snow White, she has this amazing effect on us, and we have a chance to become men again and get our honour back.” SciFiMaga Scan via stewartnews

LATimes Early in”Snow White and the Huntsman,”several droplets of blood fall to the frozen ground in extreme slow motion, a sample not only of the menace to follow but also of first-time director Rupert Sanders’ truly painstaking attention to detail.

 The shot was the last sequence filmed by the veteran commercial director, and no matter how hard the crew tried, the production’s artificial serum never had the proper viscosity or splatter. “It just looked like raspberry jam,” Sanders said. So Sanders insisted that a crew member draw about 10 teaspoons of the director’s own blood in a syringe, and that’s what audiences will see when “Snow White” opens June 1.

 Though there are plenty of fairies and magical beasts in his “Snow White,” Sanders’ movie plays like a late 15th century “Gladiator.”With a script by John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”), Hossein Amini (“Drive”) and newcomer Evan Daugherty, “Snow White” follows the contours of the fairy tale, complete with charming woodland creatures and a passel of dwarfs, while injecting it with grit and verisimilitude. Snow White (Kristen Stewart) may be the fairest of them all, but there’s more dirt under her fingernails than most 5-year-old boys. “Trying to ground everything in reality was the most important thing to me,” Sanders said. 

In his telling, Snow White is no damsel in distress. Rather, she’s both warrior and healer — she has the power to restore nature, whose balance the queen has upset. Like a vampire who consumes both flesh and earth, Ravenna has leveled the land, deforesting the home of countless wild beasts, trolls, sprites and dwarfs. “She’s a burning fire that touches the tinder of the people around her,” the director said of Snow White. “They see something in her that can make them whole again. MTV  "Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director's point of view, it's great to get into her headspace," he explained. "We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she's gung-ho.

How to explain the enduring allure of fairy tales, Snow White and the Huntsman' star, Kristen Stewart puts it this way "When good overtakes evil, it just feels f*cking good."

"Rupert beat me up." Stewart jokes. "He definitely threw me off cliffs and made me trudge through frigid, icy waters. It looks so cool, though. I can actually see the pain and discomfort on my face. It's awesome."

Sanders definitely appreciated Stewart's perseverance, "What's great about Kristen is that is that its one thing to be like, 'I'll jump off a building'. Its another thing to s--- scared about jumping and then go ahead and do it', says the director. "She didn't want to ride horses and ultimately she rode in front of 200 horses galloping at full speed across the beach in front of an army. She's very brave."

Screenrant People were very skeptical when Kristen Stewart was initially cast in this film. But now seeing the trailer and all the footage, you really get why she’s perfect casting.

Rupert Sanders: “Yeah, I think we were looking for someone who was obviously a great actor first and foremost but also someone who’s incredibly physical. Everyone thinks she is Bella from Twilight. I think she’s such a good actor that she encompassed that role so well that people think that’s how she is. When you meet Kristen, she’s so far away from that character. I’d first seen her in ‘Into the Wild’ and I was really blown away. I remembered that she was the girl from ‘Panic Room,’ ‘Welcome to the Rileys,’ ‘The Runaways,’ and now ‘On the Road.’ She’s one those actors who does these smaller films and then she does these big movies and she’s really managed her career so well in that way. She’s incredibly spirited and very kind of wild and also she’s got this kind of this alchemy to her. You’re not quite sure what it is about her but on screen she’s just incredible. She was really strict with herself that she’d wear brown contacts, which is hard to act with those things in, because so much is coming from the eyes, but that’s what Bella Swan had. Collider As you got to know her and work with her, what were the discoveries you made about Kristen Stewart, as an actress, especially with how people perceive her from the Twilight Saga movies?

RUPERT SANDERS: I think what I realized is that she’s such a good actor that everyone thinks she’s Bella Swan. They believe that that’s her. Obviously, an actor is playing a role. She is nothing like Bella. And, I got on really well with Kristen. It was great. As I was writing stuff, she was there. We had a lot of conversations, seeing through her eyes. We really hard on developing that character together. I was just amazed at her talent, really. She’s incredibly good at her craft. She’s incredibly instinctive. She’s incredibly intuitive. She will overcome fear, like no one I’ve met, when it comes to it. She didn’t really want to ride a horse. She had a bad horse-riding accident, as a kid. When you’re riding fast on a horse, with 200 others soldiers on horses riding behind you, through surf on a beach, that’s terrifying. She really went there. She crafted the accent, and it’s flawless. She’s a stunning actor. I saw her first in Panic Room. Then, I saw her again in Into the Wild. I loved her in The Runaways. I loved her in Welcome to the Rileys. I think she’s going to be incredible in On the Road. She’s a great actor, and people just go, “Twilight girl,” which is a testament to her. She’s kept this pipeline of interesting projects going on the side, so she’s not just going to be that girl, forever more. She’s a great actor and she’s made incredibly shrewd decisions for someone who’s half my age.
