Philippine Inquirer Kristen Stewart, in a short, bright-colored dress, was a welcome sight in the centuries-old Arundel Castle in West Sussex, UK. She did a few cool dance moves before sitting down for this recent interview.

We thought that was a good sign—the usually shy actress shimmying, looking very modern in orange and blue, inside a castle that was founded in 1067 and rebuilt between the 1870s and 1890s. In our previous interview with Kristen, she had indeed appeared confident. But we would see soon enough that Kristen was back to being shy. Maybe it was because the grand, massive interiors didn’t exactly invite cozy, assured talk. The setting was in keeping with the movie she was promoting—“Snow White and the Huntsman,” the directorial debut of Rupert Sanders. In this second movie to be released about that fairy tale this year, Rupert benefits from the casting of Kristen and Chris Hemsworth in the title roles, and Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna.

The interview did not lack for some amusing moments. The famous phrase in the Snow White tale, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all,” prompted questions about Kristen’s “relationship with the mirror.” “I feel good when I look in the mirror,” she said in mock seriousness.

Commercial 
Beauty routine? “I do wash my face,” she deadpanned. Her secret? “I use Proactiv,” she quipped in a TV commercial voice and tone. “It keeps my skin so clean. It helped my skin so much when I was growing up. If you ever have acne, young lady, buy some Proactiv.”

In separate interviews, both Charlize and Chris told us that what struck them most about Kristen was her pure, obvious love for acting. “I started wanting to act in movies because I wanted a job on a set,” explained Kristen, whose mom is a script supervisor. Her dad is a TV producer. She added: “My parents did it and I thought it was cool. It was so cool that I was getting to talk in rehearsal with the director and the other actors. I was observing for a long time even though I was really young. Suddenly, I was part of it. I was reveling in that, having a good time and not thinking about it too much. A few projects changed my mind about it.” She became a full-fledged actress.

Some clout 
FOR Stewart, working with Jodie Foster was memorable. Kristen aims to be a director someday but, for now, she’s happy and content being an actress. “I want to make movies, for sure,” she admitted. “I haven’t found the story I want to tell. I love being an actor so much right now. It’s such a loaded period for me.”

She’s very grateful that a certain franchise has given her some clout to green-light projects, although she was careful not to come across as “arrogant” in her influence. “There are a few things that I’m very inclined to see happen. The ‘Twilight’ movies put me in this position where we can make things happen. Like I’m doing this movie called ‘Cali’ and it’s about the Valley. I am from there. I’m working with Nick Cassavetes and I’m so excited about that. I don’t want to sound arrogant right now, but to make something happen is really awesome and cool.”

It was not too long ago that a very young Kristen was winning praise for holding her own, amid the presence of Jodie Foster, who played her mom in David Fincher’s “Panic Room.”

“Jodie was like a crew member,” she recalled. “It was great to have that as my first example of a big movie star, because I’ve definitely worked with a few who don’t behave like that.”

Our unusual setting, away from the usual hotel interview venues in LA, elicited a question about where she would like to hie off to. “I have gone to a lot of places but I have not done a whole lot in those places,” she replied. “That’s a typical story for actors who do a lot of press junkets. We’re going to Madrid on a press tour. I’m really excited about it for whatever reason. I had such good time the first time I was there. I didn’t sleep when I was there for the first ‘Twilight’ tour. I’m so excited to go back to Madrid.” Any other place? “Egypt,” came the quick answer.

Manila Bulletin LOS ANGELES – When Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson met us in a Beverly Hills hotel one lovely afternoon, the three stars of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1” talked of their ever growing friendship, how they bonded when not filming, the two final parts of the popular franchise and what all this “Twilight” experience has done to them.

On doing Parts 1 and 2, the lovely Kristen, now 21, said, “I wanted to remember the experiences as something that happened to me rather than something that I made and you really rarely get that opportunity.

In this movie, Bella and Edward get married and have their first vampire-human baby.

On doing the wedding and birthing scenes, Kristen revealed, “It’s funny comparing the wedding scene to the birth scene, the experience of it. They couldn’t have been more different. I cleared my head so successfully before I walked down the aisle that I just didn’t think. No choices were made, it just happened. As with the birth scene, I just wanted to push it further and further. I didn’t want to stop shooting it and that’s because reading the book is so viscerally grotesque. It hurts to read it but at the same time, the most beautiful thing is coming out of it. She is achieving all of what she’s dreamed of and it is literally summed up in what’s inside. It’s in the baby and obviously, it defines her character. She has been talking about being able to throw it all away. I will die for this. That’s a grand statement to make and so to see her get within an inch of that is as if she was not lying. She’s a machine. It was cool to play raw emotion that was so fundamental. Every human being can relate to it as if the role was very physical.”

BEVERLY HILLS — Rules are rules. As in other junkets and especially in this one in which the stars’ private lives are ferociously guarded, journalists are roundly reminded not to ask personal questions.

How was it doing Breaking Dawn 1 and 2 (filmed as one) compared to the first three movies?
Kristen: I think the primary difference in playing Bella was that she’s got a clear feeling now than before was sort of baseless. I mean, in the first three movies she’s somewhat worried even if she was so sure that this love was gonna work out but it was based on nothing. She was in a very, very dangerous situation all the time. In this movie, I get to play someone who has lots of things going on around her and she’s excited about them.

Robert: Obviously, by and large Breaking Dawn is the largest in the Twilight Saga. So it’s kind of exciting doing these momentous scenes. It’s the first time that Edward and Bella have sex, and they get married and they have a baby. There are huge things happening in Breaking Dawn 1 and 2. Really huge!

“Rob and I have made out in this movie more than I can possibly imagine,” declared Kristen, wearing a very short skirt that showed off her legs. “It was weird at first. It got comfortable. When we did the love scene, to be honest with you, I wasn’t nervous about it. It was easy to make fun of it because it wasn’t shot from beginning to end. It was very memory-oriented. Everything in this movie is very much through Bella’s perspective so it was ‘piece-y.’ We shot in fragments. There were lots of close-ups.”

Unlike some actors, Kristen doesn’t need a drink to get in the mood. “My job doesn’t drive me to drink,” she simply said.  Kristen cited the three’s recent big event, imprinting their hand and feet in cement in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater, when asked to talk about their friendship.

“To be in the middle of everything that we are in, to have them on either side of me is amazing,” she remarked. “A perfect example is when we put our hands in cement. I felt fairly ridiculous looking down on my hands. They were so tiny. I was just thinking, God, I can’t believe this is happening. Then you look to the right and left and it makes sense. I couldn’t have done it without them. It would have been a very different experience.”

She added, “Every time I realize that I haven’t talked to Taylor in a while, it worries me. It shocks me. I go, whoa, where is he? I have to talk to him.”

Looking into the future, Kristen said she does not make long-range plans. “I’m not the type of person who can sit down and map out a career,” she said. “As soon as you start doing that, there’s no way for you to know what you’re going to love. I don’t understand that mentality. I’ve gotten exceptionally lucky. The things that have spoken to me, like ‘Twilight’ and ‘Snow White,’ could have been made for 100 bucks. I would have done it, both of them. I’m led by other things rather than how high the profile of a film is. That means nothing to me. Whatever happens, happens. Hopefully, I stay in a position where I can do things that provoke me.”

LOS ANGELES- “It’s a secret,” said Robert Pattinson, breaking into laughter. He was just asked to talk some more about the script he is supposedly writing, based on a novel by Lillian Hellmann, as disclosed in a Vanity Fair cover story on the actor by Nancy Jo Sales.

Robert claimed that it was “one of those times when you say in an interview that this is off the record, when you are just really excited about something. She’ll say, ‘Yeah, of course.’”

The “secret” was disclosed in the cover piece but Robert clarified that his screenplay project is not based on one of Lillian’s novels. “It’s just something Lillian Hellman wrote.” Laughing again, he said, “I can’t really say what it is.”The “Twilight” series star balked at giving more details.

But other than that, he was his usual, easygoing self, quick to be the first one to laugh at himself. In our latest encounter at a meeting room in the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, he played with a water bottle as he fielded questions.

“I used to write a lot more when I wasn’t getting acting jobs,” he revealed. Chuckling, he said, “You dream about writing parts for yourself.”

He added: “The more scripts you read and the more movies you see get made ... you think, what’s the point in just producing something when you feel you can write something? I used to write all the time when I was younger … I will probably write under a pseudonym, because otherwise everyone will just tear me apart immediately.”

Robert revealed details on another matter that has been drawing a lot of speculation—that he is playing Jeff Buckley in a biopic about the singer-songwriter who drowned in 1997. “I met his mom who’s really great,” he said of Mary Guibert, executive producer of the film reportedly going to be directed by “Welcome to the Rileys” director Jake Scott. That Robert talked to Mary indicate that both are at least exploring the idea. “I don’t know,” he said, then hinted, “It’s really not up to me. I love Jeff’s music. He was amazing.”

He is modest about his own musical abilities. “I don’t really think I can sing like Jeff,” Robert said. “He was unique. Also, I can’t play guitar like him either. It would involve quite a lot of work. If someone just imitates Jeff’s voice, it wouldn’t be right. It’s always about the script. You have no idea how it’s going to represent someone.”

ManilaBulletin LOS ANGELES – “She is quite a flirt,” the 24-year-old heartthrob, Robert Pattinson, said of his 9,000-pound co-star, Tai, the lovable pachyderm in his latest action-drama movie, “Water for Elephants.”

The feeling is mutual as the “Twilight” sensation kisses the trunk of Tai during our pictorial with both of them in the parking lot of the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica.

“Tai has done more movies than me,” Robert said blushing. Tai, who lives in Perris, California with principal trainer Gary Johnson, is a motion picture veteran who has done several movies already including “Bigger than Life” and “The Jungle Book.”

Based on Sara Gruen’s 2006 novel of the same title, the movie is about Jacob Jankowski (Robert), a vet student, who falls in love with The Benzini Bros. Circus’ star performer, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), who is married to the controlling ringleader and circus owner, August (Christoph Waltz). Jacob and Marlena become closer to each other when both take care of Rosie the Elephant (Tai) who is nearly nine feet tall.

So how did he bond with his new pet love, we asked. “I don’t know if there was a real trick to the special bonding,” he said. “I just fed her a lot of peppermints. That’s about it. That’s the way to get an elephant to like you. Feed it Jelly Beans and peppermints every time you see them and then she started following me around. But I don’t know if I learned a lot about elephants in general. Tai is unique in just being so intelligent. She is phenomenally intelligent and she could even do impressions of other animals. It was totally ridiculous. She was kind of a freak among the elephants but I like them. I had an amazing time working with her.”

Robert admitted that working with animals gave him a different perspective on animals. “It’s definitely a totally different experience being on a set where there are a lot of animals,” he revealed. “There’s a calm that it creates. People are a lot happier. Nobody was complaining about anything every single day. I guess it provides a perspective on what you’re doing when you see an elephant that is just kind of content with pretty much anything if you give him some food. I treat animals in many ways the same as I treat people. I’ve met a bunch of new people on the job. God, that sounds like I’m completely insane.” He laughed.

Robert, who lost a dog last year, just adopted a new one from a shelter recently. “His name is Bear,” he disclosed. “He’s just a mutt from a shelter and he had this thing called Parvo. We took him to the vet. I don’t know but I think I am the kind of person who will adopt a whole shelter. In fact, if I were an animal, I would be a dog. A dog kind of fits into my lifestyle quite easily sitting around watching TV, doing nothing.”

With the last installment of the “Twilight” series almost over, Robert revealed he would love to have more control over the jobs he do. “I hope my career will allow me to do that as I get older,” he confessed.

But what he is really looking forward to, he said, is “to be able to live in a neighborhood without worrying that people are going to break into my house. I’m pretty happy with things really. I’d like to write some of my own material and have a little bit more time to do jobs rather than being a rush through everything. And maybe, do movies where it doesn’t mention ‘Twilight’ in the first line every single time. I’ll see what happens.”

Reese Witherspoon, who just got married to agent Jim Toth in a private ceremony at her ranch estate in Ojai, California, revealed that she wore a classic Monique Lhuillier wedding gown at her wedding.

“The gown was just really beautiful,” she said. “Monique can probably describe it better than I can. All of her gowns were so beautiful and she’s been a family friend of Jim’s for a very long time. So it was very nice to be able to go into her atelier and have her make this beautiful dress. It was really an honor.”

Her daughter, Ava Elizabeth Phillippe, also wore a Monique Lhuillier creation at her wedding. Reese also changed into another Monique Lhuillier dress for her wedding party.

The 35-year-old actress revealed that it was inevitable to marry somebody who is also in the industry. “It’s one of the inevitable things about love and work. I work a lot and I usually run into people who work in the same business as me. There’s sort of a shorthand. This business has its own shorthand, its own vernacular and the same people you see over and over again. It’s kind of natural that you would gravitate towards someone who understands what you do for a living.”

We asked her where her bravery comes from in the choices she has made in her life like starting over in love, dating a younger man, singing in a movie and the like. “Maybe it’s just foolishness,” she said and laughed. “As I get older, I get more nervous. I don’t profess to any kind of expertise in love. I’ve had all my ups and downs. And when I do films, I literally shake for five days before I start a film.”

As for working with Robert, Reese said, “When you work with Rob, there are lots of paparazzi and lots of fans around and they were showing up in buses like literally on the set. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s definitely a phenomenon that I haven’t seen this amount of attention or excitement about an actor in a really long time. Before I met him, I wondered how he handled his popularity. I didn’t have that kind of instant popularity. It built slowly for me. The loss of privacy is always difficult.

“Meeting Rob, I noticed he really handles it as best as you possibly can. As a 24-year-old man who travels the world and is internationally known, he’s a very quiet guy. He loves to read and watch old movies and he’s very smart. He’s not out at nightclubs, trying to make himself more famous and getting throngs of women following him around. He’s very quiet and shy and sort of stays at home a lot. I’m always trying to drag him out and he’s like I can’t go there. His family is really nice too and they came to the set. That helps tremendously to make you feel grounded. He has a great support system from his mom, his dad and his sisters. It seems like he’s got his head on straight.”

LOS ANGELES—ROBERT PATTINSON usually arrives at our interviews with an easy, sly grin on his face. The smile reminds us that we’re in for another humor-filled talk with the guy.

What was different this time was his haircut—cropped on the side—which made him look younger.

In this chat, Robert talks about his anxiety over the coming end of the “Twilight” series, how he feels about the kissing scenes between Kristen Stewart’s Bella and Taylor Lautner’s Jacob, and a life-changing moment, among others.
Robert has come a long way from the first time we interviewed him on the London set of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” in which he played Cedric Diggory.

Below are excerpts:

What are you looking forward to about “Breaking Dawn” being shot back-to-back as two films and of Bill Condon directing them?
I’m glad that it’s Bill Condon. I love his stuff. I haven’t seen the script yet but I am fearful about the series’ end. It’s such a great security blanket. It’s like a net. You can afford to make mistakes when you have another “Twilight” film to make. After that, I guess you’re on your own.

I’m glad the “Breaking Dawn” films will be done together. Because otherwise, it’s quite hard to fit another film in-between each one. Like what happened in “Eclipse”—having to get your mind back to where it was before. I had about a week of preparation time. It was quite stressful in the beginning. With the two films done together, you can just stay in character the whole time.

LOS ANGELES – From Winnipeg, Canada to Erie, Pennsylvania, from 13-year-olds to 53-year-olds, hundreds of “Twilight” fans camped out at the Nokia Plaza where the “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” recently premiered just to get a glimpse, an autograph or a photo of their favorite “Twilight” stars in a coveted spot on the red carpet.

The third installment of the popular franchise, which stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, was screened as part of the Los Angeles Film Festival at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.

Around 500 fans, who set up tents and waited for more than 90 hours just to see their vampire stars, even brought their favorite “Twilight” paraphernalia with them – blankets, towels, photos, posters, t-shirts, fans, among others.

We interviewed the “Twilight” stars at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles and got a glimpse of how the stars of the blockbuster series have grown and matured.

Donning a shorter cropped hairstyle, Robert, who portrays Edward Cullen in the David Slade-helmed movie, revealed that the easiest scene for him was when his character proposed to Bella Swan (Kristen) in the meadow.

He said, “Probably the easiest scene to do was when Kristen and I were in the meadow and I was asking her to marry me and stuff.”

As for the most difficult one, Robert admitted, “It had to be the tent scene where the three of us were inside the tent. I was so tired already when we were shooting that scene and I kept forgetting my lines. I was just absolutely exhausted when I did it. I could not remember my lines and I was just all over the place that day. I was getting so stressed out all the time. After about five takes, Kristen, who was supposed to be asleep on the floor, sort of looked up and tried to make me laugh the entire time. So the entire scene, I was trying to stop myself from laughing.”

Asked what he looks for in a wife or a girlfriend, Robert disclosed, “I haven’t really thought about it but she has to like dogs (laughs). I also do not like people who shout a lot (laughs). That drives me crazy.

Yeah must like dogs and no shouters. That’s about it! (laughs)”

Kristen, on the other hand, was dressed in a colorful mini dress and was more relaxed than before.

The 20-year-old poised actress explained how she chooses her films. She said, “I choose my films instinctively and I really do not know what’s going to be a hit and what other people are going to take to. It’s not really what I’m concerned with. I do not give myself that added pressure.”

In “Eclipse,” Kristen is literally carried around by a shirtless Taylor (Jacob) and protected by both Robert and Taylor. Was it frustrating for her not to kick butt instead, we asked.

“Right,” she replied. “That’s what’s so frustrating for Bella because she’s like ‘Okay, there’s really nothing I can do.’ If they were all humans, then she would definitely be like in the fight. There’s even a line, ‘Is there anything I can do?’ She’s running around the woods like pricking her finger to put scent down which is just like a joke and she says, ‘If this is all I can contribute then I want to be thorough.’ I am totally not like that but I feel like that’s good because Bella’s not either.”

She admitted it was hard to hold back and not do anything. “I could probably be certified like absolutely insane at this point because I’ve gotten so into the head space of ‘Twilight’s’ reality,” she said. “But I wouldn’t because there are vampires there and there are wolves. If there was even a moment where she could do something, she would do it but there’s really never any point. Yeah, I get frustrated. I wish I could have done all the fight training and stuff that seemed fun.”

Confident and mature for his 18 years, Taylor talked about how the cast has become close over all these “Twilight” movies.

“Rob is very funny,” he disclosed. “I am always laughing with him so that’s a major reason why it’s so hard to be his rival. Rob is hilarious. We get along great. We are good friends.”

“Kristen and I are super close,” he added. “We talk about anything and everything. During downtime, we’ll either throw a football around or she’ll throw a grape and I’ll catch it in my mouth (laughter), oddly enough (laughter). You get really bored on the set sometimes so you get creative. But she’s very athletic so I have fun with that. I’m usually the practical jokester but I think I’ve behaved myself pretty well on the sets (laughter). I haven’t cut loose yet. I’ll change that up for ‘Breaking Dawn’ (the next installment in two parts). Don’t worry about that. We get along well and we’re super close. I don’t know how we would film this franchise if we weren’t as close as we are. It would be a nightmare.”

Asked how he has maintained his buff physique that he displays most of the time in “Eclipse,” Taylor said that he continues to eat properly and exercise. “I still eat leafy vegetables and go to the gym regularly,” he revealed. “The most interesting thing that I’ve found is it was pretty difficult to put that muscle on in the first place but it’s actually just as hard to maintain it. I’ve been busy so whenever I can’t get into the gym or whenever I can’t eat every two hours, I lose it like that. I’ll drop five pounds and then it takes a long time to put it back on again so it’s important for me to stay on it so I can maintain it because it’s pretty hard. It’s still a lot of work.”
