GossipCop Well, this was predictable.
Two nights ago, Robert Pattinson premiered Remember Me in London.
On the red carpet, he was interviewed by Sky News on topics including his reaction to the surging crowds, what audiences should expect from the film, and St. Patrick’s Day. And then, because Pattinson just worked with Pierce Brosnan — and because he’s a wildly popular, young British movie star — Sky News felt obliged to ask whether he would play James Bond one day.
In the video, Pattinson shrugs and says, “I don’t know,” joking that he isn’t very good at running. He then laughs, “What am I talking about?… I’d love to.”
The interviewer suggests Pattinson could also run for Prime Minister. “I would love to be,” he chuckles.
Because these are, of course, light questions meant to break up what becomes an incredibly repetitive exercise for both interviewer and interviewee.
By yesterday, however, the press trumpeted: “Robert Pattinson ‘Would Love To’ Play James Bond!”
Sites began to strip away context, failed to mention that he’d also “love to” be Prime Minister, and instead led with, “Robert Pattinson wants you to know that he’s ready to take his martinis shaken, not stirred… [He's] ready to tackle the role of British super-spy James Bond!”
“Ready to tackle”? Not exactly the tone of the original conversation, nor any mention of the fact Pattinson was joking.
The rumor then morphed. According to one site the actor “reportedly has his sights set on doing James Bond.”
Another outlet declares that Pattinson has set his eyes “on a possible takeover from current Bond star” Daniel Craig.
Oh, good. Now there’ll be a flurry of stories hyping a phony face-off between Craig and Pattinson for 007.
Gossip Cop bets this isn’t the last we’ll hear about Pattinson’s supposedly deep desire to play James Bond. Just remember where these things start.
I would love to see Rob as James Bond, him being British, charming and all. But I don't see it in the next 10 years. Not just yet!
