LA Times What do you make of the current vampire craze? It really shows no sign of abating.

Stephen Moyer: It doesn’t seem to be abating. It’s one of those unanswerable questions because when you think it’s one thing, it turns out to be another. … I think in the teen world, there’s a beautiful romance about that stuff. I believe this year the Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart characters [in the "Twilight" saga] have a baby. It’s this perfect romance, this perfect ideal. Ours isn’t quite as fluffy as that … our characters and the way that Alan works is, as soon as a character has a semblance of happiness, he digs a hole for them to drive into. Read more

Catherine: "I tried to cast Shiloh in ‘Thirteen,’ but it didn’t work out. And then he was one of my top four candidates to play Edward in ‘Twilight.’ I thought he was pretty great, but in that case I already had Kristen Stewart as my leading lady, and we based the casting of Edward on ‘chemistry’ readings. The actors did some scenes with Kristen, and it was pretty clear that she worked best with Rob Pattinson.”

Amanda:  "When she sees two people connect, she becomes your biggest fan she wants to take that and make that into something beautiful," Seyfried says. "I think she saw that with Rob (Pattinson) and Kristen (Stewart) and she has been very vocal about that. When she first saw Shiloh (Fernandez) and me do our chemistry read, she saw something and I saw something."

Newsweek Like the late John Hughes, who discovered the teenage actors who became the Brat Pack, Hardwicke has created many of this generation’s tween idols. Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen), Emile Hirsch (Lords of Dogtown), Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner (Twilight) all got their big breaks in a Hardwicke film. She dishes about them like an older sister; how Hirsch was too lazy to do sit-ups and drew abs on his stomach with mascara or why Pattinson had to pluck his eyebrows. “They were a bit bushy,” she says. “We needed to see some eyes!”

For Twilight, Hardwicke had trouble finding an actor otherworldly enough to play vampire Edward Cullen. Then she got a call about a guy in London. “I looked at a couple pictures and was like, ‘I’m not sure,’?” Hardwicke says. “He had been fired from his last job, he was unemployed, he was in debt.” Pattinson flew to Los Angeles on his own dime to read with Stewart. “I have footage of their first meeting at my dining-room table,” Hardwicke says. “Kristen was like, ‘It’s got to be Rob!’ She felt connected to him from the first moment. “That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is.” Hardwicke gave him the part, but he had to make a promise. “You’ve got to realize that Kristen is 17 years old,” she told him. “She’s underage. You’ve got to focus, dude, or you’re going to be arrested. I made him swear on a stack of Bibles.”

When Hardwicke auditioned Evan Rachel Wood for Thirteen, she had her get into her bed with Nikki Reed. That’s also where Pattinson kissed Stewart for the first time in his Twilight screen test. “That bed made Pattinson who he is right now,” says Reed. Asked about her lair, Hardwicke laughs. “MTV came and did an episode in my house filming the bed. It’s legendary,” she says, flashing a wide—dare we say wolfish—grin. Read the rest here

As the resident high school vampire Edward, Pattinson broods and poses his way through class, attracting the attention of Bella (Stewart), a shy teen who quickly takes a liking to the pale-skinned looker. Together, the two embark on a passionate (albeit chaste) romance. Edward doesn’t have blood running through his veins; Lucky for us, the same can’t be said of this hormonally-charged film.

I have not read the books in the Vampire Diaries before the test, but knew about them, I did my research. I had read  Twilight books even before becoming a movie. And it's interesting because I love Edward and the love story between him and Bella. It's nice to experience something similar today.

You compare Elena and Bella?
I think the public can even compare them, but now I think they're so different ... Their personalities are different, their determinations are different. Bella does everything by herself and Elena does everything for others. But both are great in different ways.

Can you explain the recent spate of public through vampires?
Honestly, I do not know. Maybe it's because they're sexy, dangerous and angry. I just hope this is not an infatuation. I want people in love with them so I continue to work.

I've seen separate vids of Rob and Kristen's from this night - but this one is of better quality.

Speaking of playing vampires, "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke says you were one of the final four actors to be considered for the role of Edward Cullen. We all know that Robert Pattinson ended up getting the role, but what were your "Twilight" auditions like?

Ben Barnes:  "There were quite a few auditions. I was the first person they kind of approached about it. It was all right. I very quickly read the first ["Twilight"] book. I really enjoyed it. I think Kristen Stewart is great. I think she’s a really good actress. And I really like Catherine Hardwicke.

But then there were two things: First off, they didn’t want to mix "Narnia" and "Twilight." I think it’s dangerous to mix characters from franchises while you’re doing one. So she definitely didn’t want Prince Caspian being Edward Cullen. It doesn’t make sense. And secondly, I’d still be shooting at age 30, playing 17, and nobody wants to see that. That would be kind of sad.

And course you wouldn’t want the kind of craziness with fans and paparazzi that Robert Pattinson has to deal with in his life.

When the teaser trailer for director Catherine Hardwicke’s “Red Riding Hood” debuted earlier this week, the comparisons to her previous box office blockbuster, “Twilight,” flew faster than a vampire hunting Bella’s blood. At first blush, these comparisons seemed unoriginal and a silly bit of pandering to “Twilight”‘s rabid fanbase. But then we watched the trailer, and it’s pretty hard to ignore the similarities. Thematically, “Red Riding Hood” relies on similar elements: a love triangle, supernatural occurrences and grisly murders, just to name a few. But that’s the purview of the screenwriter. What’s all Catherine is the teaser’s visual elements, and here, even more so than in the plot, this film reeks of “Twilight.” So much so, in fact, that we took screengrabs from both films for a side-by-side comparison.

For someone who grew up in Texas, Catherine has an intense fascination with the forest—ethereal, mist-laden ones, in particular. A woodsy setting is a favored location for her characters to bare their souls. The better if her heroine shares revelations with her sweetheart while facing away from him. Who but Catherine’s couples have conversations while NOT FACING EACH OTHER?

Not entirely off topic - thought I'd share...

MTV Oh snap! The grand dame of vampire literature, Anne Rice, had some not-so-nice things to say about Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight Saga" universe in a recent interview with New Jersey's The Star-Ledger while promoting her new novel "Of Love and Evil." We're wondering if this will spark a verbal smack-down in the bloodsucking book world!

"['Twilight']’s based on a really silly premise: that immortals would go to high school. It's a failure of imagination, but at the same time, that silly premise has provided Stephenie Meyer with huge success," Anne said. "The idea that if you are immortal you would go to high school instead of Katmandu or Paris or Venice, it’s the vampire dumbed down for kids. But it's worked. It's successful. It makes kids really happy."

It's not too surprising that Anne had less-than-sweet nothings to whisper about the series that has made vampires the hottest supernatural property around and virtually diluted a genre that had been a sophisticated cultural metaphor. Still, wow, those are some pretty harsh words towards Stephenie! Anne did add that "it's almost like a stroke of genius to put vampires in high school," but that still sounds a bit derogatory to us.

When speaking about how she always viewed the vampire, Anne said, "I always thought of the vampire as being a metaphor for the outsider in each of us, the criminal, the predator. I was writing about a mythical being that represented our own dark sides." She added, "Part of the mystery of being a human being is that mixture of the spiritual and the animalian. We have the capacity to murder, but also the capacity to love and respond and be tender to those in need."

Anne was sure to emphasize that, despite the range of vampires presented in pop culture since she released "Interview With the Vampire" in 1976—from "The Twilight Saga" to "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries"—they are still fictional characters. "They’re fantasy characters, and we have to keep reminding ourselves of this. They don’t exist," she said. "I get e-mails from people who are outraged that I watch 'True Blood.' They say, 'How can you condone the evil of "True Blood."' I say, 'Are you kidding? Vampires aren’t real. Keep that in mind.'"

Uhmm that was quite harsh Ms. Rice.  I am a fan of 'your' Lestat and its not because of Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. I really like the way you write but being called the 'dame of vamp' literature doesn't give you the  license to ridicule 'our' fandom. The vampire lore was here long before you were born. 'Dumbed down' was too much I hope you were just misquoted on this.  Though this is not the first time you have spoken ill of the Saga.   I am bothered by this but not enough to rant and waste my time on you. To quote you "Vampires aren't real" so there's no need to get your knickers in a twist at the same time let me congratulate you on hitching on the Twilight wagon. Again, it would have been better in a positive light - you'll earn more fans and not lose them.
