Stephenie Meyer recalls filming the climactic birth scene. Watch the behind-the-scenes clip of Edward (Robert Pattinson) trying to revive Bella (Kristen Stewart) as Stephenie explains:
"He was really able to touch the human emotions of that scene. Rob really nailed it," Stephenie recalled. "It was really powerful. I teared up, several people near me did. It was just a lump in your throat—that moment of thinking you've lost everything and not being able to accept it. It was really emotional."
Yet, as fraught as that life-or-death moment was, we can't help but smile at the quick shot of director Bill Condon fist-pumping when Rob nailed it. Very sweet.

of course, he nailed it! he`s always played EDWARD PERFECTLY)
I'm not ashamed to admit I cried through this whole scene. The heartbreaking look on Rob's face was gut wrenching.
surprise surprise not available in my region.hmmmmmmmmmm lol, i love MTV
I cried too.It is the best scene.Perfect Rob.
I'm going to go nuts waiting even if it's for a week
Rob absolutely nailed that scene! The agonising depth of emotion he demonstrated during that whole birthing scene was truly awe inspiring!
I hate the fact that just because this is a Twilight Saga film the people involved will struggle to get the critical acclaim that they deserve!
this was much better then the movie !! bill cut out some really good scenes!!!!
I'm so proud of all of them. They really outdid themselves with this one. And this scene...there really weren't words for it, I was beyond impressed....
This week is going to be WAY too long. :)
oh S, thanks so much, i bow my head and all my body infront of you, yes you got us another vid that works, phewwwwww who needs MTV?, lol
well except for Josh ofcourse.
Kofi says thank you as well, he loved all the blood in the scene.
Loved that scene, I thought it was some of Rob's best acting as Edward!! Really powerful and moving.
I think the fact that he had to act that scene out on his real life girlfriend really brought the extra motion, its genuine heartbreak and desperation cos he more then likely was digging deep and imagining that it was actually kristen not bella. That's got to be hard, knowing logically that its just a characters she is portraying but having to see her like that, well it must of been pretty difficult. Rob did an amazing job and i am so happy that stephine saw that too :)
Rob took it to another level in that scene. It was so heartbreaking and the way he was begging her to stay with him was so stirring. I am sure SM was not the only one moved. I did love how Condon fist pumped!
well ladies let me say something just to get it off my chest. *takes deep breath and wipes sweat off her forehead* All right. Let me just say that for as long as i shall live and remain a loyal twilight fan the iconic birth scene will always be the most scariest, traumatizing, suspenseful, chilling but most unforgettible scene i will ever have layed eyes on in a twilight film or even read in the original book and when i read it for the very first time i felt like throwing up and i put on some "Metallica" music to get in the mood. Clearly when Bill Condon said it was like a horror film he was not kidding felt more terrified watching this scene more than any other horror film i have ever dared to watch in my life and im not even kidding, even when i heard the music portion by itself when i brought the score it was so freaking terrifying i cant even listen to it with the lights off. Seriousely!!! But yet in this scene roberts performance clearly went on a whole nother level as i have mentioned a couple of times in the past, he was all anxious, frisghtened, and in extreme agony at the same time saving bella's life and bringing her back to life. And the sequence before where bella is about to drop and he quickly catches her head demonstrates his undying love and devotion to her that he will never let her be harmed. And do not get me started on when he says "Come back to me baby please" it just breaks my heart into pieces so so much and if that doesnt move anybody to tears then someone needs help. Ok i need to shut up now.But u understand what i mean?
like Kristen said: "It's such a stupid movie !" lol
it's so powerful, I have chills when I watch this vid in another angle !
I cry everytime I watch this part. It really hits home now. Jim and I and other family members were standing outside the room when Leighton was born and we heard her cry. When I could go in the room my son Ethan came to me and embraced me, picked me up off the floor with tears streaming down his face. He watched his daughter come in to the world and cut the cord. He will be 21 this month and is such a young Dad but he and Kris and going to be great parents. Sorry, I know this is about Rob & Kristen and not my kids, but you're all my friends and wanted to share! Thanks!
I can't wait to get my dvd because I have cried like a baby EVERY time I see this scene in the theater and I am NOT a pretty crier. If you could see me now you would completely agree and that's just from the clip.
huhuhu....not available in mine too!!!
@Mel:Congratulations, Grandma!! I have been wondering if I missed the big birth announcement! Many hugs and much love to you and your family!
oh Mel, darling, so happy for you, champagne for everyone, a new life in the house, yay. the birth of a new life is the happiest .congrats
It's a pretty long time ago since I saw this, so it just touched me right in the heart again. Even after seeing this for the 5th time (or something like that)I'm still very amazed by Rob's strong performance here. My eyes were already filled with tears...
Thanks for posting the other vid too S! You rock sweetie :)
I agree with everyone.Rob did nailed that scene.
Mel... So happy for you and your family. Baby in the house ...
... And now I'll see if the new vid works for me ;-)
How shall I sleep now with these pics in my head? So deep emotions ... for me, Rob is a really great actor, even though he will never get the credits for the saga. Can anybody tell me what he is saying in the last ten seconds?
oh my... this scene is so heartbreaking. i cried too...
I couldn't make out what he said to Bella at the end of the clip..anyone?
oh geez, I get so emotional watching it even now...I was gripping so tightly onto the armrests @the theater, lol, so I wouldn't start crying...Rob's performance was so heartwrenching & real...he delivered it w/so much passion & deep anguish...because, she is his LIFE & FOREVER LOVE...TG I read the books knowing the outcome...it helped me fr/bawling all over the place,lol...& crying out "It's gonna be allright Edward, she'll be better than ever, you'll see"...oh my, to see Bella this way was very traumatic...counting the hours till I get to Target next week:)///||\\\
@Moe & @Anon8:56...he says, "allright...you're gonna be allright"...he's trying to reassure her & HIMSELF...poor bb...:)///||\\\
I don't know of too many actors that can pull that kind of emotion and just call it 'acting'. That was a beautiful and horrific scene that could NOT have been played any better. Thank you Rob and Kristen for doing such an awesome job!!
Thank you S for posting these clips!
@Mel Congrats Grandma!! Let the spoiling commence!
@Mel honey, congrats yo you and your family - and a special WELL DONE to your daughter in law!!
It was my younger sisters birthday yesterday and we all showered her with praise and presents - went out for a meal, had loads to drink, it was a real hoot!!
Then, just as I was going to bed, my mother said quietly to my father - "I was beginning to haemorrhage about now." And my father said to me: no one remembers all the work the mothers do...
Which is true - and I felt so sad that I almost cried - we hadn't even said well done to my mother - or acknowledged all the suffering she went through to deliver my sister - we had taken it all for granted and ignored her pain.
So - always remember the mums - they do all the hard work after all!
Love to you all out there on Planet Earth.
Oh yeah - forgot to add: Steph IS HOT! ;-)
This scene is so powerful, Rob more than nailed it, it felt like it was really happening for me, I think its like Bill said he was going to a very dark place imagining it was Kristen dying in child birth and that's why it came across as so harsh and painful. It was so well done by both of them, Kristen's face really looked dead :-(
Congratulations Grandma Mel, I'm your son will be a wonderful dad, young dads can be just as good as old/older dads. My dad was only 19 when I was born in 1977 and he has been the best dad I could ever wish for :-) We are really close that I moved my family to live 5 mins walk from him (sadly him and my mum divorced when I was 17). Enjoy being a Grandma Mel from Texas :-)
@Mel,Congratulations from one Grandma to another....My grandson *Brody* was born Dec 4th...My son in law and my other 3 daughters were there helping with the delivery. We were all priviledged to share such a special occassion with our daughter, sister and partner,it's something we'll never forget.....As for Rob in this scene, what an absolutely Awesome performance!
@ Malia Thanks, bb! It's only a whisper and difficult to understand for me.
@JerryD You're such a sweatheart. I wished more men would be like you. :-) Yeah, being a mother is underrated. ;-)
I cried in this scene...The birth scene is my fav scene after the wedding scene. Yes, rob very very very nailed it! I remember, in BD press conference for Summit, Mrs. Meyer say that the birth scene is her fav scene and admit that she teared up because Rob performance was so heartbreaking.
And I also remember when Rob interviewed at comic con last July, he asked which scene he got so emotional in BD1..and he say, “there is a scene in climax towards the end and it's incredibly sad” I think that was refers for the birth scene.
Rob always played Edward perfectly since first Twilight-BD1..but I think he really understand portray Edward since from New Moon. He is really a great actor!
@ Mel congrats to the new "nana", may life get better and better for you and your family, many blessings to cherish and keep, take lots of pics because time flies!
Rob is SOOOOOOOOOO AMAZING in that scene <3
That scene makes me cry every time!!! Btw fellow robstenites, check out Edward and Bella's wedding video... Charlie (Billy B) had the best message for the happy couple, LOL.
@passionatecindy-lol that's what always comes to mind whenever I watch a movie and I turn into a sap- "this is such a... stupid movie!"
@JerryD-amen to that! my mom had such a difficult pregnancy and delivery with my older sister that people thought she was looney for having more kids. who says it has to be mother's day for us to show our appreciation!:)
-Y
What an incredible scene!!!!!And what an actor Rob is. Just amazing and he deserves every single praise that he gets. I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to watch that scene...you know, look away...then look back. But,Rob's acting is mesmerising and I could really feel the pain...really gut wrenching stuff.
